And probably won't freeze up all the time, either

Well, I don't remember specific numbers*, but PS3 is selling slower than Dreamcast or Gamecube (and we do know how well it turned out for both). And in Japan PS3 hasn't still sold so much as PS2 sold during its first day. If that doesn't ring any alarm bells, I don't know what does.

EDIT: * I checked the numbers from GAF. At the end of March, Sony had sold 3.3 million PS3s worlwide, and shipped 5.5 million units. Considering that PS3 has only moved 230 000 units in USA, and 130 000 units in Japan during last three months, number is currently probably slightly below 4 million. Rough estimation, of course, as you can't get good data from most European markets.

Week by week in Japan it's consistantly below 1 (as low as 0.6 some weeks) and selling less software units on a weekly basis than the Xbox 360.

Latest figures (week ending May 27th) showed that the PS3 shifted 10,082 consoles and 5,404 pieces of software.

Xbox 360 on the otherhand shifted 2849 consoles and 20,005 software units. Though granted software fluctuated on the 360, It's usually around to 10,000 mark.

Just to complete the trio, Wii shifted 56,582 hardware units (stock constraints still a big issue) and 99,528 software units.

Unless I'm mistaken the launch of the Gamecube was far from a failure, in terms of numbers sold early on, so it's not necessarily an indication of doom.

As has been said numerous times, the PS3 really needs some big (Ideally exclusive) software. Simple as that.

And price drop. And image polishing. No matter what people think, 600 dollars is way too much for normal consumer to pay for console. Way too much. Especially when competitor has same stuff for half the price. And most Sony's real heavy hitters are way far away to make any impact.

People are buying it at the current price, with minimal software available. It's not too much of a leap of faith to believe that more people will buy it at the current price with the right software.

I'm not saying a price drop won't help, or isn't coming, but I don't think it's necessary until later in the year.

People are buying PS3? Less than 200 000 PS3's were sold worldwide last month. It is bad.

Sony wrongly assumed the machine would sell on brand name alone

Even with killer apps, £425 isn't a mass market price.

well i do remember hearing quotes like

"if a rock had the brand name sony on it it would sell"

think in the end for alot of people gaming is a fun hobby......and dont want it to be a financial commitment

Selling less that 200 000 units per month is downright horrible, and there is no place for optimism whatsoever in current situation. Even worser thing is that PS3 sales have gone down each month instead of gaining momentum. In fact, new, top-quality* sofware didn't help hardware sales at all. If PS3 continues with current pace, it has sold only 5 million units before holidays.

                          * VF5, VT3, Motorstorm, Oblivion, etc.

I didn't say it was selling an astronomically high amount, I said that people were buying it at the current price and without any real system sellers (Motorstorm, perhaps, aside).

The pace will pick up in September if not before, I'm sure.

Good article over on next-gen.biz on console price drops and sales. I thought that the attached pic was interesting, showing the percentage of sales of PS based on price ( which I guess are based on US figures ).

There are similar charts for Xbox1 and GC in the article.

Just reiterates that MS and Sony need to drop the price as soon as possible to keep up with the Wii, instead of releasing new revisions that are actually more expensive in price...
