Throwing another side scroller into the ring, my favourite:

Guardian Heroes on Saturn, introduced 1 on 1 fighting techniques/combos to the side scroller by relegating the movement into and out of the screen to the shoulder buttons. Also 6 player multitap madness and just all round beat em up fun

2. The Punisher

Didn't think much of the The Punisher but I loved the one with that catgirl I was playing as. What's the name again?

Another great side scrolling beat em up type game was the Simpsons Arcade Game . 4 player action, and all the best Simpsons characters. I was so disappointed that this game never saw a console release.
