Games that turned your attention to an unexplored genre

Has there been a game in the past that you tried that sat in a genre you never fancied/liked/tried and ending up loving? Did you go on to embrace more games in that genre? What game was that?

For example, I never fancied the point and click adventures of the old Amiga days, until for some reason I tried Secret of Monkey Island (the second had been out a few months at the time) and I got completely sucked in. After that I tried a shed load of point and click adventures. A few Leisure Suit Larrys... but still nothing compares to Monkey Island

Oh, and Final Fantasty (Fantasty? ) 6 on the SNES turned my to attention to turn based RPGs. I think I was too wrapped up in platform and beat em up games to give the genre the time of day.

Dragon Quest VIII turned me into a raging RPG fanboy :/

Oh, and Catch! Touch! Yoshi! to score attack games.

Final Fantasy II (US) on the SNES and Baldur's Gate on the PC. I fell in love with both and they set the direction a large part of my gaming tastes would take.

Conversely, GTA II on the PS2 bored me so much it put me off gangster games for good and I've never enjoyed anything similar since.

i had never played a japanes rpg for more than half an hour until i bought enchant arm for the 360.

i bought it purely because me and my 360 have a long term, committed relationship and like to try new things together. i really, really enjoyed it and since then i have played a huge part of blue dragon (the 3rd disk both sucks and blows hard), started dabbling with FF12 and am really looking forward to trusty bell and lost odyssey

Virtua Tennis on the DC turned me on to the idea that I could actually enjoy sports games.

Super Tennis on the SFamicom was the game that sold "Tennis" to me. Not just on the console, but watching Wimbeldon too.

That really was a great game, still my fave tennis game today!!

I've always ignored the FPS genre because any time i've ever played them multiplayer, i got battered and didn't like them. I opened up Call Of Duty 2 on the 360 a month or two back and went through on Veteran, and loved every minute (except when i got stuck on The Tiger). Now i have Gears Of War and Prey at home, and Rainbow 6 Vegas, FEAR and Call Of Duty 3 on my shopping list

I may even venture into some NTSC-UK battles once i've got a bit more practice on them.

After having Tales of Symphonia for around 18 months I finally started playing it the other day. Never been into RPGs, but prior to this all the ones I've played have been turn based, which I find very dull.
But I'm 5 hours into ToS and I am enjoying it a lot, which I didn't expect. I really like the real-time battle, much more involving than turn based. Would really like to try out some more real-time RPGs, anyone recommend any? ToS is the only one I know of =/

Zelda: LTTP, traded something for it as there was nothing else in the shop I fancied, knew everyone kept raving about it and although it didn't appeal, thought I'd try it.

15years on, I'm playing it through again (GBA vers via DS) and loving it just as much
