    Game advertisements

Im looking into game advertisements, want to know what catches your attention and what memorable adverts there has been. Pictures and links would be great too.

Also teaser campeigns, any you remember of?

And if you could make an advert for a game, how would you do it.

One ad campaign I will always remember is Quake1 for the PC. A series of posters where the quake simbol was incoprporated into a seemingly innocent scenario. One poster featured a couple getting married, and the bride wearing a quake ring, whereas another was a grandmother with a huge pie (adorned by the Quake logo). The pictures had an air of something being "not quite right". I think it was the way the photography was performed, but there was a subtle underlying darkness to the pictures. Maybe they were touched up somehow, I don't know exactly. Many people commented on the general weirdness of the campaign, and I suspect some people missed the nasty under-currents of the imagery completely, but it was an inventive campaign. There was an eerie feeling to the photographs. No idea if the publicity campaign was localised to the UK or if it was global.

Course, it's probably a bad example as pretty much any campaign would of sold Quake due to the hype.

Can't find any online examples of these pics I'm afraid.

*EDIT* Found 1 example. There were 4 that I know of. There was the marriage, the granny, the family (this one) and the sunbeds with a load of women on a beach. The marriage was the best example I think.

The recent PSExperience ads were the best I've seen in a long time regarding videogames. They were quirky. Simple. Conceptual. Most of all fun. Really showed what gaming ought to be about by not taking itself too seriously. If only SCEE could back up that sort of idea with an actual game that encompassed the fun and energy of those adverts then maybe us Europeans would have less to complain about.

The Playstation Conquered Worlds ads from a few years back are still the best ones I've seen.

I'd have an over-the-shoulder camera angle of a gamer playing the game you want advertised. He could say something like "This game is ****ing great. Watch this!" and then proceed to show you why the game is worth buying. It should be 5-10 minutes long 8)

Forget those 30 second blipverts which show random flashes of FMV, breasts and the main character posing, i want to see the substance not the style.

But sadly if you have a cack game then all you want to show is something to draw in the punters, which is what most ad campaigns seem to be.

I always thought Sega's advert for chu-chu rocket was quite different (if o a little racist) but it definately got my friends attention. "show em who's the daddy" Class

That one Final Fantasy VII advertisement made an impression on me back then: the words "The first dream with open eyes" written over a background that showed an industrial complex (Shinra Corp.?) with steaming chimneys.

                    It really was special.

The 1993/1994ish Sega ones that were littered with subtle drugs/sex references.

Can't recall any off the top of my head but I'm sure there was one with Ecco in it.

Were those the Pirate TV adverts? they were great.

I remember when the PS launched they had quite funny 'S.A.P.S' adverts.

                          You mean stuff like:

Virtua Racing - "Score some speed from your local dealer"

                          or

Ecco the Dolphin - "Weed, Speed and Blow"

Gotta say the game was ****e (like you don't know already) but the Rise of the Robots adverts that were in Viz were ace.

Just pics of the 'bots and a tag line. The one that I always remember is "I may not have a mouth, but I'll bite ya ****in' face off"

Those 'fake' gamecube adverts in the Edge equip are just great. I'd scan them in but i've lost my copy.

                              They are real simple

A cube with 'Hip to be square' underneath

Or the condoms one with little cubes on four packs with 'for your pleasure underneath'

Or a pair of jeans with the nintendo logos on and 'built to last'

Best adverts and they aren't even real
