    overstatements

Not being an avid fan of a certain gaming magazine, notably 'Gamesmaster', I'm proud to announce that I have only just got round reading the reviews from the July issue. One of these reviews was of Enter The Matrix, I thought i might share it with you.....

quote: "don't bother with the grenades - they bounce so unpredictibly you'll end up killing yourself"

-I don't think just ignoring faults as amazing physics or something like that really shows the mark of a good review....

quote: "[the driving and on-rails shooting] tend not to be as spectacular as the rest of the game"

-like all those realistically similar corridors, eh?

quote: "the sinister twins pop up for a brief (and frustrating) chase sequence"

-and is it frustrating because it needs mad-skillz or because it's just poorly done?

another quote: "there's a two player dojo option - but you can't use focus and the camera's terrible"

-i think he doesn't like it because the focus mode is the only good point about the game.....oh yeah, and the camera. Although i received a distinct feeling from this comment and review overall that these faults don't matter because IT'S THE MATRIX!!!11!!1!1

quote: "some of the best bits involve covering your mates with sniper fire - they aren't too bright"

-I liked this unintentional mention of the crappy AI...

a stupid quote: "instead of playing some half-arsed conversion of the action in the film...."

-what? you play ETM instead of that, or-wait, those are the same thing!

another stupid quote: "some of the coolest action happens in the cut-scenes leaving you wondering why you couldn't have done it yourself"

-strange, i thought the reason for that would be that a control system relying on only a couple of context-sensitive buttons wouldn't allow you to do that, and even if it let you do it, it wouldn't be you doing it -much like the rest of the game, it'd just be you pressing one button for another context-sensitive effect.

really stupid quote: "the controls are fiddly at first...."
-i thought that was cos they're crap, oh wait, here's the reason for it:
"...that's because you've got so many options"
-oh, now it all makes perfect sense!

oh, and this: "the [control] system's as intuitive as possible"

    -*cough*

    "it's a shame they didn't include more third-person action..."

-why? so then we'd all kill ourselves?

and one last quote OF THE MONTH (found in the 'gameplay' colomn):
"there's so much variety you wonder why they bothered with they driving and flying"

-This review, in my opinion, is one of the worst i've ever read, and was littered with many more quotes and reasons like the ones above. The fact that they mentioned a lot of the games faults but then didn't take any of them into account annoyed me quite a lot.

Oh, and in case you're wondering they gave ETM 87%....i'll let you work out what that score would be in Edge...

due to a lack of replies, i'm presuming that either:
    a) you think i'm a dumb-ass noob (fair nuff)
    or
b)there was nothing within my original post to certify a reply

well, have any of you ever read a review that you know was blatent overstating along with hype etc (i think we all have, actually) or do you want to turn this into more of a debate over bribary and 'corruption' within games reviewing, concerning PR perps and bad reviewers......i've certainly heard bad comments about Kieron Gillen before now.....

When you're stating the obvious (gamesmaster magazine is of dubious quality), silence tends to mean agreement

yep...glad you all agree with me then, Gamesmaster was only mildly entertaining on the telly

I could have forgiven many of those quotes because they were taken out of context, but to give the game 87% after so many huge flaws are mentioned is just wrong

Some of those quotes are shocking mind, makes me think the review was quickly edited and thrown together for an exclusive (?). I just can't imagine that a professional would try for a decent review and come up with this.

Well, lets see. 89% in Gamesmaster normally means something is bad enough to be an Edge 5. So 87% is two points worse than 5, i.e. 3.

              Seems about right.

5 isn't a bad mark in Edge though - it's an average mark

Those PR girlies must have given some magazine reviewers some mighty good blow jobs.

Gamesmaster mag does suck. The Tv show was excellent though except when that other guy (not Domonic Diamond) was presenting it.

Check out their DKC for the GBA review:

                    Quote: DKC's a Straight port...

Um nope they've changed it quite a bit by making it easier and therefore terrible...

Quote: ...on a game that relied a lot on its graphics, and that ain't enough.

Um nope again, even though it did have incredible graphics when it came out it did not rely on them as it also had kick ass gameplay to boot. It seems like the guy who reviewed it hasn't actually played the original all that much.

alas, the crapness eminating from Gamesmaster is lethal...especially their amazingly poor editing techniques, as there seem to be, on average, 1.7 spelling mistakes per word, er sorry, i mean page. But hey, what can you expect from an office full of chimps on crack....

                        You mean Babyface ;-)

Overstatement of the quality of games has always and will always happen, I for one have learned to cope with it thanks to:

*flashback sequence* In the 8bit era the screenshots on the back of the game box always had the arcade or amiga shots..you learned to accept disappointment pretty quickly after that. *ends flashback*

*cough* Sega Master System Outrun and Space Harrier shots.....
I still havent forgiven them for playing with my emotions like that! I remember arcade shots on the back of the Amstrad version too - you load it up....and get wireframe

talking of ETM, i just saw this:

Square wheels mean you use less power when going up hills.
