    Setting up your PS2 vertical

Ok, apologies if this has been mentioned before, but I heard somewhere that if you have your PS2 upright/vertical, that this may damage the discs/laser. Is this true? Or just one of those stupid myths going around? If it makes a difference, i have the old thick ps2.

Edit: I just remembered that Sony released an actual stand for it. So surely it should be ok?

    Thanks

    Jonny.

I see.. What concerned me was this thread.. http://forums.dvdfile.com/showthread.php?t=12496

I guess iuts just a matter of being careful not to move the console while its on, no matter what the orientation of it.

        Yer, tis bollocks mate.

I remember when Q3 came out on the PS2 and it got scratched to buggery. When I took it back, the mong at Game asked me if I had the machine upright and tried to convince me that the PS2 only stands on its end for storage purposes and this is stated in the instruction book, which of course isn`t true.

When a colleague of his looked at the way the disk was scratched, no more was said and it was instantly replaced. Needless to say no other game became scratched in the machine in the 6 years I owned it and it was stood upright for all of that time.

Cheers mate, that kinda puts my fears to rest!

Come to think of it.. I remember where i first heard about this. G Force had signs up aages ago, saying not to have it vertical or you would get your games scratched..

I had mine standing up for about 18 months-worth of play after I first got it, and it's never given me any problems. I still have the same machine now.

I've owned four PS2s in my time and every one of them has stood vertically without a problem. The fact that they're promoted like that and the drives are designed to take a disc without it dropping out when vertical suggests that it's not a real issue.

I don't know for sure, but when I used to work in a games shop two seperate sony reps told me that standing the machine up messes it up. Having said that the sony reps did have a reputation for talking out of their arseholes.
*remembers the time when they told me this is football was 'the best bits from pro evo and fifa mixed together..........

I'm with the majority here. I had my first and still most used v.3 old style PS2 vertical for the first 2 years and then swapped it to horizontal for the last 3 years. Not a hint of trouble except occasionally dropping the disc whilst loading/unloading the tray which is down to my clumsiness.

It was only because I bought a TV with a stand/storage shelves underneath that made me change to horizontal.

The Sony logo is also designed to rotate depending on the orientation and there are rubber feet on both bottom surfaces depending again on orientation so you can be fairly certain it was designed for this.
I'm still using a V5 as it has proven to be the most reliable but PS2s in general are prone to laser failure which has probably perpetuated the myth.

Yeah the ps2 works either way up no worries, however you should NEVER change the orientation while its spinning a disc, same for any console or optical drive actually, surefire way to scratch your discs.
