I just doubled my Joust high score. Everything clicked today. 
It's a really cool game. It's third on my MAME most played list after Robotron and Bomb Jack.
A good game is all about the feel and there's a lovely sense of inertia in Joust that keeps me coming back.
The collision detection is perfect as well. I thought it was a wee bit random at first but once you get used to how the AI attack and catapult off the roof it all makes sense.
