    PS3 60gb prices!?

seems used 60GB PS3's (PAL) are going for big money! Seem them on Ebay at ?400 +!
    Are they that rare?

Glad I bought one when they were there as I like playing PS2 stuff on it

Yep they've held their value well, normally go for £375ish or more.

Not for much longer if the BC rumours are true.

        I hope this comes true.

One thing I have heard banded around is that 40GB machines will let you play PS1 games, is this true or some myth?

That's true, as all of the PS1 emulation is software regardless of the machine.

So you can't play PS1 games on all PS3 machines?

What rumour is this? Thinking about buying a PS3 in the next few days but is it worth waiting?

There's a rumour that PS2 backwards compatability will be added to the 40GB PS3's via a firmware update later this year. No hard facts yet though.

But it (PS1 backwards compatibility) is provided entirely by software and has been for the entire PS3 lifecycle. There is no PS1 hardware inside any PS3.

PS2 front, this is the situation...
NTSC 60GB/NTSC 20GB are Hardware Emotion Engine powered PS2's.
Euro 60GB is Software Emulated PS2.
Euro 40 GB is Nowt at the moment, as said a rumour is abound that they will flick on software emualtion via a firmware update, thus killing stupid 60GB prices on thier arse.

                        As for PS1.......

So the PS2 chipset emulates the PS1? In both PS2's and PS3's?
                          Kept you waiting, huh?

PS2 PS1 support is mainly hardware; PS3 PS1 support is mainly software.

I'm pretty sure the PS1 emulation is entirely software, given that the 40GB PS3s, which have no PS2 hardware, can play them. I mean Sony has already written a software PS1 emulator for the PSP, so it's not like it's a big challenge.

I still wouldn't bank on software compatibility for PS2 games coming, though. The part-hardware emulation in the 80GB PS3s still has significant problems with plenty of games and I know from experience that the software emulation of much simpler PS1 games is far from perfect. I tried playing FFVII on my 60GB PS3 (a US one, with full hardware PS2 compatibility) and it was full of sound and graphical glitches. Flickering icons, distorted effects, stuff like that.

It could prove me wrong, though. We'll see.
