Don't hate, I bought these for the cover

I've been told 'never judge a book by it's cover', so I guess the same goes for games. But that hasn't stopped me buying a couple just because I though the cover was attractive and I had the cash on me. Two examples.

    Disgaea
I'd kinda heard of it before I bought it, and I still have a thing for sprites. So when I spotted it on the shelf and looked at the cover art, I couldn't stop myself. But after that this tale briefly turns sour, because two years later (maybe more), I still hadn't played it. I ended up clearing out a lot of videogame junk and this was included. Terrible... but in recent months I did purchase the PSP version, so balance is restored somewhat.

    King of Fighters 11
Cover art. Sprites. Money in pocket. Deja Vu, no?

So, bought any games largely because the cover art gave you an erection, or matched the colour of your curtains? Either's good.

We're all been there, Zak and Wiki was the last game that got me with it's cover, Shame the whole dying thing ruin it for me.

I nearly bought Odin Sphere today because of the lovely cover art. The game looks ace too so I may well return if and when the price drops below a tenner.

I too bought Disgaea and a whole bunch of other Nippon Ichi games based on their covers. I know that they look fantastic and that I should like them as they are quality games but I never get on with them. I want to like them so much but never can.

i must admit, one of the key things that made me buy a 7800 the other day (shallow as it sounds!) is that i'm a sucker for the old 2600 / 7800 cardboard boxes the games come in.

Every game i brought when I was younger was based purely on the quality of the picture on the box. How I avoided so many lame titles for my Atari 800XL and 2600 using this method i'll never know.

I fall into the trap of buying any game made by Atlus or 505 game street simply due to the cover, despite many of their titles being very hit and miss

I haven't bought a game for it's cover since having a launch Japanese Megadrive. Games such as Magical Flying Hat Turbo Adventure and Ringside Angel come to mind.

                That KOFXI cover is nice.

Er.. Yes I am the most guilty person forever of doing this. I love how Japanese SNES Games are packaged so I've bought loads! Yoshi's Island is a particular favourite, and R-Type III. The SF games all look good too in Jap form. Admitedly these are good games but I have loads I haven't even touched - most are Jap RPGs. I also bought a game called 'BASTARD' just because of the name.
I also love Imagic's games for the Intellivision - they come in nice shiny silver boxes with a sliding tray, and have full colour illustrated manuals, and plastic overlays for the controllers. Gotta collect them all!
I also have a Neo Geo which is the ultimate in amazing looking games (packaging wise) + they are huge! I like the later KOF covers especially. They must always be Jap games for me though. I don't like the way the USA and EUR ones don't have fullscreen covers. Shame about the manuals though - you pay loads for a game and you get a sh*ty looking manual. I try to buy all (cheap) games, even if they are rubbish.
dogen - you must buy the limted edition of ICO with the art cards - it looks fantastic - especially when you open the packaging out.

It's pretty hard for me to say whether my decision to purchase a game is purely influenced by the cover art, or subconsciously by other information I have about it XD

Saying that though, had I not already read up on Odin Sphere, I probably would've bought it on the cover art alone, to be honest.

And looking at the KoFXI boxart does kinda make me feel like buying it...

I have it, it's nice. Very pretty. I have the french version though, and I can't remember how I came to have it. But the manual and box is all in french, so I can't understand it; just like the in game language. =o

If you're going to buy something for the cover, make it Denryu Ira Ira Bou on N64
