    Training videos / modes

    Hallo,

Just been playing Ikaruga and thought I'd try and work out what to do in the first bit of the second level to chain the little planes which swirl around.

The person playing was amazing and managed to get something like 900K on just that section!

Thing is, now I've seen him/her do their stuff, I feel a little dirty playing that section, because I've been shown what to do... This is in contrast to the first level when (s)he pretty much does what I'm doing - which makes me feel well chuffed.

Don't know if anyone else gets this feeling (or cares).

I replayed the first level repeatedly to get a good score. I got about halfway through the level on a max chain and downloaded a video and realised that there are one or two things that I could do different to get a better score.

I used them and did better...

I didn't feel bad, I was just chuffed that I was able to do better.

I didn't mind to be homest... I'm a cheat! I know it! I'm sorry, won't you forgive me, Lord?

I enjoy watching vids because they are entertaining. Sometimes they are helpful in showing how to complete a particular section, but I mostly enjoy watching them to be wowed by the skill on display. In many videos, it's practically impossible to "copy" anyway, as the standard of play is so high. The best Ikaruga play I ever watched was on the Appreciate DVD, and some of the stuff on show is way above my standard (even though I can chain higher than a lot of the lesser vids floating around).

Was the video you saw from the Ikaruga Appreciate DVD?

There are several vids knocking around on the net, but after you've seen this guy called WIZ complete Ikaruga on NORMAL using 1 life (on the DVD), they all look quite average in comparison. I watched this replay from beginning to end twice when I got the DVD, it was that impressive, totally blew my mind. He chains so flawlessly, it's difficult to see any point where he could improve.

HERE is a sample of the second half of his level 3 performance if you want a look. Scary. (You'll probably want to right-click Save As..., as its just a normal avi, not a stream. 19MB)

That man, he's a MACHINE!!!!! I was watching that clip with my toes curled until the boss when I stopped it (havn't gotten there yet)...

No, it wasn't that Appreciate DVD (which I would get if it wasn't stupidly priced) that I was watching and looking at that bloke it now seems pretty amatuer.

There's certainly a difference between being shown the way and being shown how to completely cane the way.

Right, I'm off to play some Ikaruga.

Incidentally a clip from the Appreciate DVD from ch 2-1 is here:

This is a very very hard procedure to copy.

When I learnt to chain 2-1 I copied the demo, so I only get 38 chains from it, whereas the DVD gets 44.

(See here for a review of the DVD: http://www.insertcredit.com/reviews/ikappreciate/ and plus links to a few more sections of the DVD)

He actually misses 1 chain there. He misses 10 black and 1 white, but it is only possible to get 3 black extra to what he does. Therefore he misses one chain. It is a risky maneouvre but is shown on the DVD in the omake section.

Are you referring to the ingame demo ? I've only ever seen it play through 1-1 (dreamcast ver) Is it just a case of leaving the game alone and waiting for it to play the 2-1 demo ?

On the GC version of the game there are 3 demo videos for each section of the game - a dot eater demo, an average demo and a competent demo.

These are not included in the Dreamcast version.
