    Piracy

What do you think about it? Playing or Selling? Not just games, you could talk about Movies if you want. Will you admit to owning any pirate copies of anything and if so why do you buy them instead of legit copies?

This topic was kinda done not long ago. HERE is da link.

I have a few DC copies atm, simply for evaluation purposes as I'm in the process of creating/completing my Dreamcast collection, and you cant just go out and rent an NTSC game from blockbusters, can you

So whereas some games, you know you need in your collection, some you need to test before you shell out on, I dont want to pay like ?30 to ?50 on a rare, highly acclaimed game and when it arrives from Japan/USA feel that it wasnt worth buying
On top of it, all my mates either arent gamers or are strictly PAL gamers, so I've got no-one to borrow import games off really

ps-I do actually bin the copies once I've made a decision as to whether or not I'm going to buy the original, my motto, is if its not worth me buying at full price/going rate, I shouldn't really be playing it at all

Its a practical thing for me, apart from any moral or legal issues. I already have shelves full of games, records and films all legitimate and paid for, more than I have time to get the most out of as it is. Using my limited spare time tracking down things illegally seems pointless, really.

My latest tactic when watching films is to sneak in the fire exit at the cinema, watch the film and if it is any good, then I will go to the front desk and buy a ticket.
Anyone trying to justify piracy can get lost. If you do it, then admit you do and that you know it's wrong and move on. It's a fairly dull topic anyway.

It tickles my laugh when people leap onto a very high horse when it comes to game piracy. I've no doubt they've got just as many MP3's and/ or DIVX films as the next geezer. And I bet they play emulators with illegal ROM's.

Ok, I have a few VCD's of Movies that I wouldn't see at the pictures. Its very hard for me to get to the cinema and if the movie is good I buy it on DVD when it comes out. I know its wrong etc but heres the reasons I give to make myself feel better about the fact. Hard to get to the cinema. Dislike cinema due to nosie, dickheads with phones, talking etc... If I want to watch a movie then I don't want to have to wait till its showing at whatever time. Its cheaper. I can bring my own food, take toilet breaks, rewind, do whatever. Im not saying its right but its what i do. Yes I do download MP3's.

I know this topic has been done to death before, but I actually find it quite interesting to hear peoples views on this and their moral justifications on both sides.

I think we must accept that using roms of old games is still piracy, as is copying music tapes and cd's, the large corps that control the industry want one thing, your money and they dont want you spending your time playing old games for free when you could be forking out 40 quid for the latest one.
I would say that there's no difference between copying a music cd, downloading a new game or downloading old roms, they all have the same effect on the publishers, they the lose money from a potential sale.

So do the people that shout out against piracy include all forms of piracy including roms and music?

I go out & rob from all the highstreet chains for my games & if they're anygood I post an envelope through their doors, late at night to cover the cost of games I enjoyed

                    bignige / charlesr,

do you use emulators and download roms for old games or copy friends cd's / download mp3's?
Not on either side here, just interested, please be honest. (no pun intended)

Number of times I have ever thought "Hmm, no, I won't buy the fantastic New Game X because I've got Downloaded SNES Game Y to play instead" - precisely zero.

Or even just playing my trusty old SNES games - by the same reasoning, I'm damaging the games industry by playing it too, rather than (also, not the only alternative thing I could be doing) buying some new games. Why is it different if I'm playing Umihara Kawase, emulated on my XBox, rather than playing SF2:Turbo on my SNES?

I've had the odd DC ISO or CD-R of a PC game but when u get told XXX game ur unsure of for a quid off a m8, it's sorta hard to refuse, especially when u don't have too larger cashflow, but recently I've not touched any pirate booty at all. Been too busy playin the legit stuff to care I don't get as much enjoyment out of pirate games thought, I don't know why, but it feels like something is missing and even own the DC games I originally had on ISOs legitimately now.

None of the money I paid for SF2: Turbo (on eBay) went to Capcom or Nintendo - the games industry is unharmed/unaffected either way.

PS2 Backups are handy whilst waiting for WE7 to arrive

The problem with rips is usually you get loads and never get round to actually playing anything.

What i've always done, is if i like a game buy i it.
