    PS3 won't obtain ip address

Having a bit of trouble getting my PS3 online. Working fine as usual until yesterday. It recognises and connects to my router, but fails when getting an ip address.
My 360, Wii and laptop all work fine using the router, anyone suggest anything? Not too computer savvy so laymans terms would be best, thanks!

Assuming the media test works (So the cable/wireless connections are OK) then it's possible that you're out of available IP addresses in the router. It shouldn't be a problem (Most router configs allow for over 250 IP addresses), but it might only have limited leases.

Try switching everything off (Except for the router), restart the router and then try the PS3. That should rule out a problem with DHCP.

That could be what it is, as I've had 2 people using laptops on the router in the past couple of days. Is there any easy way to all the router to allow more IP's?

It'll differ from model to model, but you'll be looking for the DHCP scope settings (Within the LAN configuration). It'll have a range of addresses available (Usually something like 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254 (.1 being the router IP)), so you should just be able to expand the range (It won't let you put in anything higher than 254 for the last octet, unless it's not using a class C mask... but I think you probably don't want to hear that crap. ).

Good lord Number45, I'd hate to see what you'd come out with if you weren't using layman's terms!

Yeah, sorry. Networking and security is what I do, so I never know quite when I'm being too technical or not.

Sorry to bring this up again, got the IP address working but having trouble with the DNS settings. Checked the ones my laptop and 360 are using and tried those (as well as seemingly everything else) but still no luck Any ideas?

When you say you have the IP address working - can you ping the PS3 IP address from a PC?

The PS3 should pick up the DNS servers from your router, but if you want an open alternative you can use 158.43.128.72.

I'm having loads of problems with obtaining a IP Address as well, it was fine a few days ago but suddenly the ps3 won't connect, like Johnny my Wii and 360 is working perfectly.

Well I'm just using the one on my PC and entering it manually.

Tried that DNS number but getting the same error

Try entering it manually, that sorted me out. But I'm still stuck at the DNS stage.

If you're entering the IP address manually, you'll also need to enter the IP address of the router (Default gateway), otherwise it'll have no idea of how to get out to the internet. Have you done that?

Yeah just tried that but it's not even searching for the internet connection, just coming up 'failed' straight away.

You know I kind of get the impression that there's no connection for the PS3 at the moment. Even if you put in a manual IP address you should be able to ping the PS3 from your PC.

If you do an ipconfig (Open up a command prompt and type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) and hit Enter) on your PC when it has a working connection, what results do you get?

You should at the very least see an IP address, subnet mask and default gateway, something along the lines of:

                            IP address: 192.168.0.2
                            Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
                            Default gateway: 192.168.0.1

If that's what you have, just give the PS3 the same first three 'octets' (The number separated by the '.') for its IP address and increment the last octet by one. So, in the example above, for the PS3 should have:

                            IP address: 192.168.0.3
                            Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
                            Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

AT THE VERY LEAST, once this is setup, you should be able to ping the PS3 from your PC (Again from a command prompt, type 'ping 192.168.0.3' (No quotes)).

That will prove that the network connection itself is working.

                            Hopefully that all makes sense.

Yep, I can get all that info ok. Is that all I should input or should I also use those DNS numbers you suggested?

In terms of the ping, tried that and got this response on my PC:

                              Packets: sent = 4, received = 1, lost = 3

Not too sure what that means tbh :P My bros playing a game atm so will try upping the end numbers like you said in a while
