Depends what you want really. Fifa for the first ever time is nearly PES but not quite. Its worth it alone for the online 10v10 and be a pro. It looks great

On flipside PES has much better crossing and box play with headers etc.. and a miles better single player with master league. Its the best next gen PES but its really back to the old Winning Elevel 5 style of faster wing style play. It looks average

If you asked me as a 360 owner I would say Fifa as PES is still borked on the 360 due to its pad but on PS3 its harder to call. If you like your online then definetly get Fifa if you want a solid single player Id still go PES personally (I have em both PES on PS3 Fifa on 360).

Me I adored Fifa (and Ive been a PES fan since day one) when it came out and I can see me playing it online for ages. Single player the sheens worn off with it and Ive got sick of alot of the niggles with the AI for me the the shooting aspect is more scripted as I cant do loads of headers and crosses like I can on PES (as well as shots at goal) when Im playing a team on my own in manager mode so Ive gone over to PES for that.

The shooting is only "scripted" if you play it that way, if you turn the shooting assistance off in the menu then its not "scripted" at all. Same goes for the crossing.

Had a Pro Evo tourney round mine Sunday and it was aces (360) but I've bought it on PS3 for free on-line games.

Played some fifa 09..definitely not in the same league as pro. I found it a bit 'clunky' tbh.

It would be worth trying both if you could though...as alot of people seem to like both.

Get PES 2009 if you are gonna play with mates offline alot, it is still alot of fun offline. Online however, it is laughable.

Get FIFA 09 if you want a more realistic football game plus a myriad of online feature which actually work without lag!

Bottom line is both are good but FIFA 09 is probably overall the better game.

                  Hmm here we go again.

If you discount online for me you can basically pick PES09 every time. FIFA this year looks amazing and plays well but it feels almost over-animated where you have to wait split seconds for key animations to end before you can make your next move.

Of course once you get used to this and the pace of the game it opens up into a very solid experience but Im often found wanting to make moves on the spur of the moment as the defence opens up and its not as instantaneous as I feel it should be.

Switch over to PES and its a whole other ball game (yes pun intended). It moves faster and feels a bit more arcadey but the response times to the controls and the actual flow of the game feels more realistic to me. Its almost like PES offers a more intuitive experience where quick play and reactions not requiring much pre-thought execute far better.

Really thats the only thing I can level at FIFA this time around. If they nailed the flow and controls to be faster and more responsive I might never look at a PES game again... FIFA is just that good. Its just a shame it isnt.

As for PES. Its still an archaic looking game with basic form from the menus right through to the graphics and effects but it still manages to come out glowing with a tried and tested control/response. I think simply put (for me) it just plays better, not hugely better... just better.

Only massive negative with PES is online is still awful and a hit and miss affair. FIFA has come along leaps and bounds here and dare I say it its the most feature complete sports title online I've ever seen. Its got everything you want and pretty much everything you dont want as well for good measure... plus it plays solidly online.

Yet again its a close run thing and even closer than any year before, so much so that if you cant pick either just accept they're both great and pick both. The only thing I know hand on my heart is when I have mates round for our regular tourny sessions PES will go in the box and FIFA will stay in the box... FIFA is great, but PES just has that extra something on the pitch that makes it more fun against another person in the same room.

In summary... if PES managed to fix its online modes its going to instantly be my choice from now on. Likewise if FIFA manages to feel more responsive and flow better it will benefit greatly from it. As they both are now they're good games... just make your choice.

From the moderate reasoned viewpoints to the fanboys nobody seems to mention the fact that for some of us there is actually no quality based decision to be made.

I have put years into PES, going all the way back to the amazing ISS on the N64, in the same way a Zelda veteran see's certain things in a dungeon and goes 'ahh, I know how this works' I simply have too much time invested in the series to switch and try and learn another one in FIFA.

My son is getting the same way now as well, we know the language of the game, even if a new version feels uncomfortable and like a new pair of shoes for a while you still know whats going and what you're trying to do.

Frankly I don't have time to switch series and try and learn a new game, we can get better matches faster on what we know.

FIFA may be a very good game but I fired the demo up and felt totally lost, didn't know what buttons did and had too much 'button memory' built up, I still even throw up manual passes in the heat of a game on new PES when trying to do a trick or turn on the 2nd stick, its like switching to an auto car and your left foot planting down looking for the clutch.

Saw some decent points on rllmuk comparing PESs approach to Gran Turismo, in thats its not realistic but has its own set of rules to what its simulating, and it seemed a really good analogy. Doesn't stop millions buying and enjoying GT does it ?

So for me, and I'm not sure how many others, the quality is irrelevent, as long as PES isn't totally knackered (which is obviously subjective and some will argue it is) it will always be my footy game of choice, and can't see anything altering that.

Thought I could leave this thread alone and not chip in but I can't.

                      Lol...

I've done the same thing crossing between the two games... I've ended up switching the FIFA controller scheme to marrying up to PES as much as possible but you still often do through balls or passes and find they go astray or in a direction you totally didnt expect.

I must say its been a lot easier going between this years two games than before, probably a sign that FIFA really is a lot better this year than ever before.

I play both games and use the Fifa control scheme on PES as I prefer using B/Circle to shoot etc.

I know some people argue that the games play too differently for someone to enjoy them both but I disagree as both have their good and bad points and I think they are both pretty accesible this year.

In terms of graphics, online play, official licenses and realism FIFA wins.

In terms of gameplay, however, PES wins. And that's the most important thing for me.

                          Just my opinion of course.

I dont use auto shooting on Fifa I use manual same with crossing I detest scripting like that. Your misunderstanding my "scripting comment" m8. I didnt say scripted in how they shoot or how they cross I said in how you actually get to shoot and cross which is down to lacking AI ready to receive it in the box. PES you can cross from all walks of life and shoot at any angle because your AI is ready in the box all the time to anticipate the crosses or passes to them at that area to head at goal and shoot at loads of angles recieving at edge of box (and poach for rebounds off the keeper). All Ive had with Fifa is bomb down the wing to cross and Im lucky if theirs anyone up fron their with us to cross to as the box is empty so I have to wait which usually means a failed attempt thru defenders or cut in for myself to shoot on goal. It just doesnt have that bombard the box to get goals from crosses so it becomes more of get the ball to the lead attacker and go for it on Fifa thru the last defender at the centre of the box to shoot so for me it becomes a very generic way to score on 1 player. If Fifa sort the crossing into the box with the AI for next year it will be pretty much perfect for me. If they sort the delay out with button presses (as pes is instant) etc.. it will be.

I just prefer more wing play and crosses thats why Ive gone back to PES on single player as Im sick of having to wait for the AI to catch me up (different 10v10 as people know what to do thats why I said Id play Fifa online all the time and PES offline as Fifa works perfect online).

Bought Winning Eleven since about 3 or 4 and I have to admit as the peeps at WENB podcast have after playing the Fifa 09 demo it is a gorgeous game and the animations are out of this world, as much as I want to have both and I know and admit Fifa is def better this year I am still going for Winning Eleven. It`s taken me about 10 years to get to the level I am on it I ain`t gonna throw that away . I feel I would get mauled at Fifa also especially online which happens with Winning Eleven a bit even with my Beckham like experience. The one thing I will say the attacking thrill of Winning Eleven will never be beaten by Fifa even though Fifa`s realism is fantanstic. Maybe I will afford both, but I doubt it so Winning Eleven only for me I think.

One thing that does baffle me about online play on Winning Eleven is I`m playing Winning Eleven 2008 Arcade Championship online in game centres in Japan and there is barley any lag . I know with the amounts of peeps it`s different but if they can get this to work within Japan on an arcade machine why not on the home consoles?
