    Gitaroo Man appreciation thread

I decided to have a look for some of the older Euro PS2 games I've missed out on and came across Gitaroo Man for just ?12.99 at Virgin.

I'd heard great things about it and had just completed Space Channel 5 Part 2 so it seemed like the obvious choice, and after playing it for a while, I think it might just be my favourite PS2 game! I can't believe how fun it is, and some of the music is fantastic (Especially the second challenge and the one with the girl). The difficulty level is a bit higher than I was expecting, but that's a good thing in these kind of music games as they're normally fairly short.

Has anyone else got this game, and if so, what do you think of it? God bless THQ for having the guts to bring it over. Shame it doesn't happen more often, but with games like Enter The Matrix and Tomb Raider being the type of games that sell on PS2, it's to be expected.

Yup. I'd long anticipated this one and bought it on day of (PAL) release.

Fantastic stuff. Innovates just that little bit and couples its, damn addictive, core gameplay with great tunes, a mad story, and colourful stylish visuals. What more could you ask for from a rhythym action title?!?

The only niggle I have with it is the PS2 pad - I just get the feeling that the GC or maybe even the XBox analog sticks would have made following those curves a bit more precise.

      I love this game !

Picked it up a little while ago and wasn't able to put it down for ages ( still go back to it now and then for a quick go as well )

There's some great tunes in there

My faves have to be the Legendary Theme, Flying to Your Heart, Beejam Blues and Born to Be Bone

Fantastic music, and I loved it so much I got hold of the soundtrack

Well worth getting, as they make great tunes for the car

Great game, one of my PS2 faves along with Frequency. I've only recently got hold of a copy, and I'm having trouble getting past the level where they're flying through space...
The stuff going on in the background is hilarious, I just wish you could concentrate on it a bit more when you're playing the game...

Thats an absolute bastard of a level till you get the hang of it

Luckily it doesn't last too long

My tactic is to place two fingers from each hand on the buttons and button press for all your worth !

Bloody fantastic game , Ive been addicted since buying it months ago .

Love the visuals , love the soundtrack . Nothing more satisfying than getting thru some of the hard as nails sections .

Easily one of the most fun PS2 games ever JMHO.

            Eagerly awaiting a follow up

I loved this game so much, but then I unlocked Masters Play (Think thats what its called) and now it is the most frustrating game in the world, its the only game that can get me so mad that I actually DO throw my control pad at the wall, but yet I still go back to it, finally finished stage 2 and now im stuck on stage 3 and have been for about 4 months.

Im sorry but master mode is just impossible on this game im on level 3 too and i just find that my finger always gets really sweaty and slips off the analog stick. Total respect to this game though the tunes in it are awsome just makes you wanna hit every note!!

I enjoyed this game too. Some of the levels were very tricky, but I managed to finish the regular mode in the end. The harder mode is another story though

A couple of niggles though. You have to be careful when saving because it doesn't automatically retain your highest scores for each level.

Also, I don't like the PS2 pad for this game. The analogue stick position means my thumb is constantly reaching over for it (unlike say on a GC pad) and as a result I don't have the same control over it and my finger slowly starts slipping off it. The alternative control setups aren't really any better.

Otherwise it's a great little game with some top tunes.

I'd echo some of the comments above, loved this game to pieces but master mode is just way too hard.

Also, little seen SNK rhythm action game Cool Cool Toon is a better game, and while being difficult seems fairer. Two player Cool Cool Toon is more fun too.

I agree with Papercut that Cool Cool Toon is probably a better game, but I adore Gitaroo Man all the same -- the visuals, character and music is fantastic. The album version of The Legendary Theme is stunning.

I recently bought a PAL* copy of the same quite cheaply - and I concur, addictive as hell.

I'm up to teh Sanbone Trio level at present - 'Flyin' to your heart' has been the best as yet ~ though the Mojo King Bee and Kirah levels were both great too ^^

I have a few qualms about the loading/saving scheme ... but no matter, a great game nonetheless.

                        S.

(*I'd prefer it J-NTSC though. I suspect there are some timing issues with this release, which might be why folks are finding Mastermode so hard. Anyone got a lead as to where a J version might be found ?)

I've played the Jap one (albeit briefly) and master mode is just as hard...
                          It's just that tricky!
I can't imagine playing against the Sanbone Trio on hard...

One of the best games on the PS2 and one of the best Rhythm Action games aI've ever played.

Spatial101, where did you get the soundtrack from? I've been dying to get that. Please tell.

I too love the game, though I've only ever played it rarely. I bought a copy for my Brother, but haven't seen it since. I managed the level in space (4?) on my first go, which was very pleasing
Screwed up the one with the girl though.

Level 2 is lovely, great music.

I came very close to buying Cool Cool Toon as someone was selling it here very cheaply, but for some reason I let it pass. I may go out on another hunt for it after pay day...
