wii update to kill imported saves?!

sorry if this has been posted elsewhere but i couldnt see it. just got a message today from nintendo asking me to update the shop channel. i nearly did before reading that apparently as unauthorized save files may damage the wii console the update would automatically detect and delete them. i would only loose no more heroes but im wondering if this affects other people. what about region switched vc or wiiware games?

So what exactly will this update do???

I have a US machine so does this mean I might lose all my saves too if it asks me to update??

Or because I have a US machine with US saves (i.e. same region) it wont delete them because they are in theory "authorised" saves??

    I've confused myself now

i think it means that because i have a pal machine it will kill all my jp and us saves.

same as if i had a us wii it would kill my jp an uk saves.

      i think

        Ah that makes sense

Hmmm could be a bugger if I do the Zelda hack then.

Will keep an eye on this before I decide wether to do the hack.

          Also being discussed here:

Basically just wait to see what the homebrew crowd say before updating.

It's the same text as the last update - it just removes the TP Hack save.

Yeah, it sounds like it would just remove that one and the import ones would be ok. However, there can't be anyone that's still using the TP Hack save on a regular basis rather than the HB channel, so who knows...

The main thing is, this stops you installing the HB channel if you don't already have it.

I have heard some PAL gamers saying that WiiWare games they bought from the US Wii Shop such as World of Goo won't run now!

                LOSE!!

Once the HB channel is installed the twilight hack isn't used/needed any more.

From what I've read with the new update, all of the IOS's have been patched against the security flaw that allowed fake signed code to run. Previously only the newer IOS had been patched (which was not used by the System Menu, allowing a previously installed HB Channel and other homebrew to run without problem).

The previous update also only targeted the Twilight hack game save, it sounds from what Nintendo have said that the new one might target any 'illegal' content it can spot. I think game saves get signed against the host console, so it might be possible for them to spot any that have been hacked in some way. Would also be simple for them to blat content for the wrong region, if that is what it is now doing. Not sure if anyone has confirmed any of that though, so maybe it still goes after the Twilight hack game save only.

I guess hackers now need to find a way to install older unpatched or hacked IOSs to work with the new shop channel, and will be looking at a new method to install the homebrew channel.

Its being reported that the HB channel will still work after the update, so presumably it creates a genuine signature for itself when it installs.

Nintendo = Lose. I've just got into buying things from the shops (world of Goo, My aquarium, Opera, Last Ninja II, etc). Now I'm unable to buy things from the shop.... Won't this just promote piracy? The people that were pirating their VC and Wiiware stuff before aren't going to stop now and the people that were buying their stuff and enjoying region free will either have to stop buying VC/Wiiware or resort to piracy.

Always times out on me, this update. Oh well. Was curious to how they've improved the Wii Shop...

They haven't improved the shop at all as far as I know. It's to try and prevent people loading pirate shop items.

They've changed 'Wii Points' to 'Nintendo Points' (or at least got the channel ready for the switch)

One of the homebrew devs has released a tool to update the system with IOS51 and the new Wii shop channel update, without modifing the other IOS. So this mean you can get both homebrew and the Wii shop update running on your system, i think.

Is this a good idea? Or should we wait for something else?
