    PS3 'Black Screen of Death'

I haven't used my Playstation 3 for gaming for a long, long time (aside from the Mirrors Edge demo).

I finally find a game I like the look of (Little Big Planet), sort out a trade on here and it arrives today only for me to find my Japanese launch PS3 no longer works.

    Typical.

You turn the machine on, the TV recognizes the HDMI handshake (indicated by the 1080i/60 appearing at the top of my TV) but I get no picture or sound.

Having a quick look over the internet, it appears i'm not the only one who has suffered this. A few people have posted remedies that have worked for them, but not for me. So far, i've tried:
    • Trying a second HDMI cable.
    • Trying a third HDMI cable.
    • Using three different HDMI cables on both HDMI sockets on the TV.
    • Using a component cable.
    • Holding down the standby button on the front for five seconds whilst powering the system on to reset the video mode. My TV actually notices this, with 576p appearing at the top of the TV, but still no picture or sound.
    • Swearing, crying and flailing my arms.
    • Using a different power cable.
Anyone else got any tips on how to get this working again? I know it isn't the TV, as I tested the HDMI sockets with my 360 Elite and my Toshiba HD-DVD player.

I get this with my PS3 as well. From what I can gather the HDMI socket on the console isn't too secure. Remove the hdmi cable and re-insert it firmly. Use the yellow/red/white cable that came in the box and turn the console on using the 'hold down the button for five secs' method.
Go to the display options and setup the hdmi output again. It's a pain but I haven't found a permanent fix for it.

Have you tried connecting it through composite while resetting the video options? Then setting the display settings to whatever your TV supports?

Okay, after spending a good 30 minutes looking for a composite cable (I couldn't have just left it in the box, that would have been too easy), I can get a picture through that.

I go to change it to HDMI however and still nothing except the 576p handshake from the TV. It's obviously giving out some signal, otherwise it wouldn't flash up with 576p at the top of the screen, but i'm still getting no picture or sound. I'm beginning to think the HDMI socket is done for.

Component works, but I don't want to use that for two reasons. Firstly, it's a 50" TV, which I really can't be bothered to shift all the time as the Wii usually occupies the component slot and secondly, the picture is noticably worse. It's either my TV (which I don't think it is, other things over component don't look this bad) or the cable (which is a cheap, naff unbranded effort given to me for free by someone.

Right now, I don't even have the spare cash to buy an official component cable, let alone have to get the PS3 repaired (or worst of all, buy another one).

Only thing I can think of it out of date firmware affecting the HDCP handshake, but that's a long shot.

I am up to date on all firmware updates but the most recent one, which i'm downloading now, just in case.

I had tried the latest firmware and carried out a full restore as well but that made no difference. I also tried the cable from my HD-DVD player but still the same problem. Had to be a faulty HDMI socket.

I've just been on the phone to Sony customers services about the black screen / HDMI issues with my PS3 and they are sending a replacement system to me next week. I'm quite impressed with the service Sony are offering especially when you consider my system is out of warranty.

[nothing], I know your system is a Japanese console but it may be worth calling Sony anyway. 08705998877 is the PlayStation support number.
