LOL at the headline which suggests MS and Sony are championing the end of this ridiculous packaging method. They use it more than anyone

It's an awful way to package things, but I suspect aside from the fact you risk life 'n' limb trying to get the at the contents it's a surefire way to annoy resellers and collectors.

I wish MS and Sony all the best on their crusade to rid us of their packaging nightmare.

At last!! I once bought a PS2 memory card, took it home, hacked the packaging to bits opening it, and the card was faulty. Went to return it, and the store got ****ty because I the packaging was "damaged"!!

Being able to open an item I've paid for - brilliant idea!

I actually call that "blister" packaging... you might get one from trying to open it. No heh, it's because it's like a blister technically... the bulge in the middle being the pus-like goodness

It's everywhere in the US though. I hate it as well. I've not done myself an injury yet opening the bloody things but I've come close on several occasions.

The stuff drives me insane, I think the packets are getting harder to cut into. They must have invented some super hard plastic that is now only used in riot shields and video game accessories.

It is ghastly many times have I cut myself with the actual packaging or the implement to get into it.

about Time...i recently got this battery charger in this packaging.....i was saying as i was trying to open it.....they could make shuttle re entry Tiles out of this stuff...and i cut myself on it

The waste of plastics etc in packets these days is shocking to say the least, its nice to see the video game industry is doing something positive about it. How will the Daily Mail be able to slate the games industry over this I wonder.

Had no idea that type of packaging was called clamshell. Clamshell to me is a DS case (or Neo-Geo pocket games), which makes far more sense...obviously named by an American who doesn't know the difference between football and soccer

About time. I cut myself on one once - it wasn't a deep cut particularly but at the time I thought to myself "you could actually really hurt yourself on these".

None of us intentionally tried to make this a hassle for consumers

Last Summer on the way to Japan I bought a DS screen protector from Game (I was about to embark on an Ouendan 2 marathon) and asked if they had any scissors to open the blister pack. They didn't have any, as we were past the security bit so noone was allowed that sort of stuff.

So I walked out the shop with my blister packed screen protectors and started hacking away at it with my key but only made a little nick in the edge, so then using pure human fingertip strength I spent a few minutes bending the little nick back and forth, much to the bemusement of a bunch of young, hip French tourists next to me

The joke was on them, though, as after about three minutes of this I managed to get at the protectors and stick them to the screen in one fell swoop. May their beloved screens be scathed by cheap, knock-off styli.

I think everytime I try to open one I injure myself in some way...I've had more nicks & cuts from the razor sharp edges than anything before in my life

I really hope this comes through soon.

I need an end to the potential death dealing packaging.

Whats the advised method of opening this stuff? Even large scissors are a pain in the arse to get through some of this stuff. I tried a sharp knife which worked well, but how on earth would the young or old cope with them?

I like being able to put things back in the packets. Denied with this stuff. Kill it all!

I use a knife like this one:



It's small (about 2") but really really sharp (I cut into my finger years ago trying to pry open a snes pad connector and still have a little C-shaped scar from it).

The main thing is patience. The trick for me is not to feel like I absolutely HAVE to get at whatever's inside the packaging as quickly as possible.
