    There's no such thing as a second-party company. The 'parties' in the games industry are the first party, which is the console manufacturer and its internal studios; the second party, which is the consumer; and third parties are independent companies that can muscle in on this relationship.

    Layton is a first-party game (published by Nintendo) developed by a third-party studio (Level-5). A studio can have a publishing deal but still be an independent third-party - Insomniac is a good modern example - but if it's actually owned by the platform holder it becomes a first-party developer like Lionhead is for Microsoft and Naughty Dog is for Sony.
