Insanely difficult games..?

Inspired by the thread (sniff sniff) Tear jerking moments in games and a particular game i'm trying to play at the moment. The game happens to be Contra 4, is it just me or is this game one of the hardest games ever made. Its insane! I'm playing it on easy as well, i never had a problem with Contra 3 or Shattered Soldier, as found them quite fair. But this is a joke. It can bring you to tears, especially if you have been playing these types of games for a long time.

So what games do you find that are really difficult?

Weak skills are WEAK! Viewtiful Joe isn't really that hard once you suss out the best way to link your powers for massive damage.

Contra 4 however, I will concede is pretty hard. I thought Shattered Soldier was harder but C4 plays quite fast and the dual-screen layout doesn't really help matters. Aside from the obvious like bullets getting lost in between the screens, I find the vertical orientation means you have less time to react on the horizontal plane, whilst the vertical is far too big for you to see all at once. You'll also be completely screwed on certain areas if you don't have the exact weapon they want you to have. Trying to play the jet-ski level with the regular pea-shooter is just

The first boss is a nightmare too, you have all sorts of things attacking you at once. Even on easy the game is a bitch. The enemies just keep on coming, then i got onto level 2 with all the lizards coming at you. grrrr.

Alien Hominid.... never could make it past the 2nd level.

Smash TV - I refuse to believe that finishing this without continuing is anything but impossible.

Call of duty games on Veteran - CoD4 specifically, that ferris wheel/helicopter section... and the epilogue!

Megaman 9 - First MM I played, only got the demo and without some serious practice and level memorising this is f****** difficult!

I finished Smash TV with my dad!!! of all people without continuing on the SNES years ago. Its not that hard...seriously.

Hardest games tho imo, off top of my head:

Super Ghouls & Ghosts on the SNES, play it top the end and weep, i kid you not. Its merciless.

Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox. Very difficult bosses even on normal

Devil May Cry 3&4...Nuff said

Commando towards the end was insane

Contra 4 was stupidly tough

I remember battletoads made me smash a pad Stupid f*cking game

Guitar Hero 3 on Hard!!!

R-Type was very hard after level 5

Defender was just insane imo as was Tempest

Also Diddy Kong Racing challenges on reverse maps for the coins...............took me ages to do them all. Ridiculous as one mistake on any track meant failure

Shinobi as well was mega tough

Lol, keep remembering games. Star Wars (vector version) in the arcade i found ludicrously hard even though some people could sit down and play for 3 hrs straight.

I find the Contra games particularly difficult. I want to like them, but I'm too impatient.

2D action games like this I tend to be worse at than 3D. Ninja Gaiden (xbox), God Hand, DMC etc were fine. Megaman, Contra, Ghouls & Ghosts and the early Castlevania's are another story. While I have some fond memories of the megadrive and snes, I only really started gaming properly with the N64 - it probably has something to do with that.

Ghouls N Ghosts is definetly one. I never did finish it myself, don't you have to complete it twice to get the true ending?
