Back in 'the day', import all the way because of 50Hz slower nonsense. These days that's not an issue so it really doesn't matter - whichever is cheaper and gets to me faster, assuming they're identical content-wise.
Of course, Nintendo Europe and their antics, they're working hard to make sure we still have reasons to import (release dates mainly).

Being a noob sega owner back in the day I didn't really discover imports until animal crossing so the majority of my retro stuff is pal.
I tend to buy region on availability so I've got things like suikoden on ntsc as it was a lot cheaper to get and obviously exclusives like rhapsody and thunderforce III. My collection is 95% pal. I have quite a few import ds and psp games as again, on the whole they are cheaper to pick up or weren't available here when I got my systems.
I can see why importing was so popular years ago but the need is reducing at the moment with release dates coming more into line and less dodgy pal ports.

I'm not voting as it's not relevant anymore, I just buy from whichever region is most convenient.. but release dates are all over the shop now so there's not necessarily an advantage in importing.
Being in Japan most of my purchases are Japanese discs, but I can get American discs from Play-asia with no hassle (as I did for MGS4 for the voices) and for Killzone 2 I will be importing from the UK (as it has a two month headstart over Japan).

I used to be imports all the way, but I've completely u-turned now. PAL all the way.
I even buy all my games from Game now. I'm one of their best customers. For me it's all about the ease of purchaase, and trading in some games and handing some money over the counter to instantly get the game in my mitts is the easiest way.
