Personally I think they peaked with House of the Dead II (an 8/10 game) but I suppose one could be a ten if it offered something new. I mean before LittleBigPlanet I doubt I'd have argued if someone said a 2D Platform Game would never again be a ten...

Perhaps a light gun game with some amazing online modes? User created shooting galleries or something? I imagine even a solid First Person Shooter patched to use light gun controls could do it.

Well it's based on the falacy that content = amount of enjoyment, when House of the Dead II has given me more enjoyment that most so-called '10/10' games.

But it has to be hard for a reviewer to tackle the genre. When formulating our own opinions, we can go on purely our emotions, how much we love the game. House of the Dead II is a 10/10 for me. But when a person is reviewing a game with an audience in mind, it requires a little more rational thought and consideration. It requires a balance between an emotional detatchment from the subject, yet equally showing genuine passion and enthusiasm (else risk sounding dry and sterile). I'm not sure I'd give House of the Dead II a 10/10 if I reviewed it for a magazine or website, even if it is a 10/10 game in my eyes. It's difficult.

I really need to review Ghost Squad. It's maximum awesomeness. It's also a little different each time both in terms of routes and weaponry. It has a reward system similar to the CoD4 ranking so longevity is assured and as far as I'm concerned, it's the best light gun game ever made and I'd argue it would be a 10/10.

Yeah but it's all subjective. Famitsu gave Garou: Mark of Wolves 25/40 and Capcom vs SNK 2 35/40 yet I imagine most here consider Garou the better game. On the other hand I consider F355 Challenge and Outrun 2 to be the worst games I've ever played but I know others here would give both 10s so maybe we're just placing too much emphasis on scores and should just accept most games are a 10 to someone.

I've played it a couple of times in the arcade and had a good time, but it didn't strike me as anything mind-blowing. Should I give the Wii version a look, then?

You need to invest time in Ghost Squad for its true brilliance to be appreciated. I've never played the Wii version but I sank untold amounts into the original arcade game (before they released the stupid Evolution version without the IC card slot ¬.&#172. It's seriously awesome.

The original Time Crisis is worth a 9 easy, the sequel was probaly too, as was the first two House Of The Dead games.

All of them are extreamly well designed.

It actualy sickens me that somthing like GTA 4 gets 10 out of 10's for its 40 hours of average game mechanics when the afformentioned titles are the pinacles of their genre, probabaly offer more game time than 40 hours through replay value, and still get lousy marks despite the fact that they play like a dream.

In that case reviews are pointless and all games have the capability to be a 10 to someone. Which I agree they are unless you are a mum not sure what to buy.

Let's say for some obsurd reason you are playing Virtuoso on the 3DO, or Super Scope 6 on the SNES just to stay on topic... then all of a sudden five really hot chicks walk in and start mollesting you for 4-5 hours, that particular game will always live in your memory as being a **** hot experience!! You would even play it again to relive the memories in years to come.

I like, love and own many light gun games... Let's just agree that Sega and Namco win.

I actually thought Confidential Mission was one of, if not the best light Gun Game but yeah i wouldnt give it a 10. An 8/9 is a perfect score for these sorts of games.

                          Yeah Confidential Mission was great.

I think light gun games should be capable of a 10 but I haven't played a 10 one yet. I think, for me, the thing with light gun games is that they have not adapted to the home experience. An arcade game is fine having quick bout play and light gun games have been perfect for this.

But most games, when they evolve beyond the arcade, need more and this is where we take out 10 standards these days. Ridge Racer's track and two variations was fine for arcades. Not at home. Compare to RR7 and its multitude of tracks, options, etc. and even that isn't called a 10 game and many modern racers offer much, much more.

But light gun games have, for the most part, remained unapologetically arcade experiences.

I don't think that rules out a 10 completely. Not at all. But it would want to be one absolutely hell of an experience to warrant that 10. It would want to be the best damn light gun game ever. And, it would have to draw more play than the initial couple of hours or so playthrough.

But I think light gun games need to find a way to adapt to the longer form home experience, as racing games have done.

Can Metroid Prime 3 be considered a lightgun game?

This discussion also highlights how different scoring systems can affect perceptions of scores.

There isn't one light gun game I've played yet that I would score 10/10 (many that would have scored 9) yet there are plenty that I would score 5/5. Yet those fives wouldn't be anywhere near as "controversial" as scoring the same games a 10.

It also shows how retarded Metacritic is, when in its eyes, a 5/5 and 10/10 are the same when in actuality they aren't.

I kinda see what you mean, but I've seen some daft mags give 4.5/5 or something, which is effectively the same as scoring 9/10, so in those cases 5/5=10/10.

I'd say TimeCrisis2 was a 10/10 ... I played that one to death. I'd have liked to have tried Ghost Squad, as I love light-gun games, but my experiences with the WiiMote made me think that it had too much lag to cope with lightning-reflex aiming, which is kinda what I'd want from a lightgun game.

PS. Does anyone know if we're ever gonna get some lightgun action on the 360?
