    It's a lot of history to cover in one article but right at the start the writer falls in to this classic cliche

    " the first real ?generation? of home consoles came about on the 15 July 1983 with the introduction of the Famicom, or Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)"

    That is the belief that there was no console history before Nintendo. For an article that covers the evolution of game controllers that is a terrible omission. The zapper was not an original Nintendo idea, there were lightguns way before they did one.
    The whole pre-Famicom period was experimental, analog controllers, 3d glasses, keypad inputs, wireless controllers, fight controllers, steering wheels and more.
    Also the writer by ignoring this period didn't get to mention that the influential Famicom controller itself was an evolution of the Game & watch controls.

      That is a fair point and something I considered. I chose to start the analysis after the end of the first 'gaming bust' because:

      a) I wasn't alive (pre 1983) and have no experience of anything pre NES (save for a ZX Spectrum) so I can't talk authoritatively about those consoles - nor do Ihave the resources to go and try all the old consoles for myself unfortunately - I don't want to write about what I don't really know;

      b) it was a convenient point in time to jump in to the subject - although technically you are correct I wonder how many people do think that consoles began with the Master System and the NES; and

      c) the scope of the article would just have been too big - that may be ok for an in depth article in Retro Gamer but I am not sure if it would hold the attention of Internet users - it would have been double the length it is already.

      I'm sorry you think it was a terrible omission - at least I can tell you it was a conscious one!

        I thought it was a great read. Very interesting to see what Nintendo had tried before.

        And seeing as my Dreamcast is a bit stuffed it should still be in warranty than

        There isn’t an awful lot to say about the 4th Generation of consoles. The Dreamcast came first on 27 November 2008
        My only complaints with the article is that it chops and changes its timeframe. It went on talking about the Gamecube and Xbox and even into 2005 talking about Guitar Hero, back to this:

        Then a curious thing happened. Sega withdrew from the console market and the arms race had become a sultry three-way war.
        "Then" a curious thing happened? After 2005? To someone who doesn't know anything about a consoles history it could be quite confusing. Other than that great read.

            I know the bloke that did the research for the original Xbox pad. Interestingly, the giant pad was much, much more popular when tested against smaller pads with the target audience (male students) - it was manly and worthy of what was (at the time) such a powerful machine.

            and based on a few opinions in a focus group, crap decisions are made
