Halo sold me on the original Xbox, but Project Gotham Racing, Dead or Alive 3 and Splinter Cell also heavily influenced the purchase. I bought a 360 for the promise of Gears of War and the eventual Halo 3/Fable 2.

It was October 26th 2001 and I went to visit my friend who worked at our local indie with no intention of buying anything. I was a Dreamcast fan, quite happy with it and just hated the disappointing and over hyped machine that was the Playstation 2. So much had been promised, so little delivered. The Dreamcast was where my new gaming interests were and would easily sustain me, along with the N64 and Playstation One until the new Nintendo machine came out.

Without speaking, knowing how much I disliked the machine, my friend handed me the PS2 control pad. It took a moment to realise GTA III was on the screen. I played for five minutes. After that, knowing I would be in debt to it for the first time, (but not the last) I got out my credit card.

Yes, one game has sold me a console.

That's a great story. Gta 3 is still an awesome game. I only played through it for the first time last year, and I loved every minute of it. I don't get on with most new games because they're overcomplicated and going in directions I'm not very interested in. I don't think many people would go back to gta 3 now because the sequels are kind of considered updates. My brother who was onto gta iv by the time I was playing 3 had a quick go on it for old time's sake (he played through all the GTAs as they were released) but he just couldn't deal with it because of the (as he saw it) missing features and archaic graphics and such. What a tragedy.

Anyway, I can't think of any single game that sold me a console, although I would have bought a playstation, an n64 and gamecube, even if the only games ever released for them were final fantasy vii, ocarina of time, and animal crossing. Having said that, I did just get a NGPC pretty much exclusively for Sonic Pocket Adventure and I have not been let down.

As soon as I laid my eyes on Mario 64 I wanted that machine. Watching it on TV that game gave me a buzz that no other game could've done. I hadn't even played it yet but I was in lurrrv.

The N64 turned out to be my favourite console!

                      SF2 - SNES
I played SF2 in the student bar every day. One day I discovered I could play this game at home by simply paying several hundred pounds to import a SNES from the US and another £90 or whatever for the game. Sold.

Need For Speed made me buy a 3DO
It was the graphics what made me do it officer!

                      Wave Race - N64

                      Metropolis Street Racer - Dreamcast
Looked incredible. The lure of driving around London was too much.

                      Halo - Xbox
                      Amazing.

Metroid Prime and Wind Waker - Cube
2 very different games made me realsie the range of fun I could have with a cube.

The promise of MGS4 made me buy a PS3

I have no idea why I bought and XBox 360 though

                        SNES - F-Zero
When it launched I saw it running in a shop window and I'd never seen anything like it. I bought a system the same afternoon.

                        Saturn - Virtua Fighter
I'd played the arcade. I'd seen screenshots. And then I saw footage of it running on (supposedly) the first Japanese import system in the country on a Gamesmaster news item. The next day I phoned my local importer.

                        N64 - Mario 64 & Pilotwings 64 (jointly responsible)
Seeing it/them is one thing but having a quick go on an import set-up in my local indie sold me in seconds.

These are games which made me buy a system.

Since then i've pretty much bought new hardware at launch as a matter of course.

Ridge Racer V on PS2 - played it in Toys R Us. When I did get one I then mostly play SSX and GT3 when it came out.

Halo - Xbox. Bought it in the US on launch, played it in the hotel room. Totally blown away. Hard but when we got home I ebayed it for a very healthy profit, didn't get one for ages after that so was quite late on the Halo wave.

SNES - Super Mario World - loved this game
N64 - Mario 64 - loveliness and I enjoyed the first Turok - a big wow for me
XBOX - Halo - played this at a mates co-op and was hooked straight away

The next gen 360 and PS3 nothing sold me - very poor release games IMHO, but looking good with Gears and Killzone. I hope for more!

Ridge Racer on PSX was the thing that started it all off for me, sure I wanted Mario on the SNES and bought the console for that, but it was knowing I could get my hands on Ridge Racer the day the PSX came out in Japan that started the madness of importing when it was a seriously expensive hobby.

It landed at 3pm at Heathrow, by 5.30pm I had left Leicester got to Heathrow and was on my way back with a nice Jap machine in hand.

Then walked into a games shop the week the Jap N64 was released, I had my name down with a few importers from the back of the mags and they were all saying another 2 days, and there in this tiny shop that didn't even do imports was a brand new N64 with Mario and PilotWings, I knew the guy who owned the shop and he was selling them for £900, we shook on £710 which gave him £50 profit and I spent the next week glued to Mario 64.

The next time it happened was the Wii, bought it for Mario Galaxy and played that and then sold it, no other game on that system interests me.

I have bought a 360 ready for the Square Enix releases and for SFIV, could have bought that on the PS3 though.
