why cant gaming be taking seriously

i dont know about you guys but i am totally ****ed of with people saying "gaming is for kids" and **** like "when you have responsablity you will grow out of it" well **** that im gonna be into gaming till i die ive been into it for roughly twenty years now and i would say my interest in gaming is actually getting greater.
i just dont understand why gaming is classed as socially unexceptable or kids stuff and if your an adult into gaming your classed as some kind of freak/geek

Its the whole computer = nerd thing.

People are just insecure about what they don't understand.

Only exception to that is when its "cool" to like it, see the first wave of the playstation marketting, or football for another. I'm sure there are lots of jonny comelately who don't really get football (like even know all of the team for example, can't you tell I know zero about footy) who just want some of that "coolness" to rub off on them.

Do you really want people like that buying games and thus influencing what games get made?

To be honest I'm a little fed up with the whole mass market approach, obviously games companies want to make as much money as they can, but why can't they take playmores* approach with the Neogeo? I don't mind paying more for a quality title, rather than less for something thats been dumbed down for the wrong reasons.

*hopefully there PS2 ports will be just ports

Yep, it pisses me off more than anything. What's geeky about it? How does playing games instead of going out and getting drunk and getting into a fight make me sad?

I have a level of respect for games now that I didn't have 12 months ago. I am proud to have that I have such dedication to games. I've played games since I was 7 or 8 years old and, tbh, don't give a **** if my family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues think I'm a sad bastard for doing so.

To be fair my family don't have a problem with it (well why should they?) and are pretty supportive of whatever crazy scheme I've got planned. I recently re-arranged my entire room because I had no space for my GC/PS2 games

My mum occasionally says things like 'stop spending so much bloody money!' but she's never said it's a waste of time or money. My Dad has watched me play Ikaruga and was damn impressed by it (they guy has taste )

Bottom line? Games are ****ing brilliant and I will be playing games until I get bored of it (I'm only 19 so I've got plenty of life left in me). If you don't like it then T.S.

        I missed Tankplanker's comments.

I totally agree about the mass-market thing - it really pisses me off. Unfortunately that's the way the industry is heading so there's little the real gamers can do. At least some devs are still prepared to make games and not just interactive movie licenses

well the people who generally say that are naff at videogames, or they are jelouse.

I have a mate at uni who was forever taking the piss that i spend more time playing games then i do on my degree blatantly over exagerated but, he didnt like the fact that i mentioned he has had my PS2 with Vice City, MGS2 + smackdown 4 for the past 2 months

Well.. my exact words "you stupid bloody tramp, drop my PS2 back at my house, then u bellend"

He then preceeded saying that he has hardly touched the thing, even though he was forever asking me and others how to to do a certain mission on VC or MGS2.

The fool also bought my DC off me, then returned it to me 6 months later saying that it dont work bloody cheapskate.

A pretty unexpected yet utterly intriguing debate on the maturity of games in general took place in this thread, it's six odd pages but there's a lot of food for thought in there - http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/viewtopic....ighlight=fable

My dad used to play games like Golden Axe with me.

And I don't know why most people don't understand gaming either, but in some ways I like it more this way. If gaming being 'mainstream' means more games like Tomb Raider and The Matrix then I wish it could go back to being supposedly 'underground' like it was 10 or 15 years ago. I say supposedly, because in some ways I do believe games were less issolated back then. Arcade gaming was certainly more social than online gaming, and we had mainstream games show on Channel 4 at 6:00 in the evening!

Yeah, I got a lot of stick when I purchased a dance mat. My sisters boyfriend was laughing at it, and saying all his workmates daughters have them.

                      Big respect my friend

I would never have the balls to walk into a shop and buy a dance mat

A dance mat is nothing compared to buying a copy of DoA: Extreme Volleyball. Makes me wonder what people were thinking when I bought it.

man, you should be ashamed buying that

                            *tankplanker quickly hides his copy*

I don't know why people bother trying to get games to go main stream, its only going to lead to trouble.

Take Halo as an example, best selling game on the xbox, not a license or a sequel, and it didn't have a major TV advertising campain. This was sold on the back of praise in magazines and more importantly by word of mouth by the hardcore.

You could argue (with justification) that the xbox didn't have many quality games released post launch, and that the xbox to begin with was a hardcore choice, but still halo sits in the charts. But this doesn't change that it still sells very well.

GTA3/Vice City is another example, not as good as they are sequels and Vice City had a TV campain.

Stop making games that the hardcore enjoy and eventually the mass market will pick up on it.

What would you rather have, acceptance and onlu the hulk to play or RS2?

Gaming can't be taken seriously because it's seen as culturally redundant in the eyes of many.

That isn't to say this is true, but it's rather the wider perception at large.

                              In my opinion anyhow.
