What should classic 2D games look like in HD?

I just saw these mentioned in the latest copy of GamesTM and they're so beautiful, I thought I'll post them here.

Orioto at Deviant Art has revitalised some classic Videogames by painting them how he feels they should look like in the modern era.

After Street Fighter 4 I wish some bright spark at Sega, Nintendo and others could realise how good looking their old back catalogue could look with modern consoles and get cracking!

Well, personally, I'm far from impressed with how SF4 looks. But that Sonic image is gorgeous.

I'd like something like that. You know, if the game was actually good.

But I also think there are huge opportunities for 2D games in HD, though I think we'll rarely see anyone take advantage of it. It's more about the power of our machines now than the HD itself but games can have full traditional animation in actual proper games - like crappy Dragon's Lair but actually good. Like a fighting game, like a SF game, could be animated by actual anime animators and the drawings represented properly on screen. We're beyond pixels.

But, back to the 3D stuff, part of the problem in the jump would be losing the feel. Like, that Sonic image looks lovely but would they be able to really integrate the rest of the Sonic imagery, like the checkers, loops, stars, whatever, and have it gel with a world that has plants that realistic? I don't know. You could end up with a technically really impressive looking game but one that lacks coherence.

If you got it all working together though, well, it could be something rather special.

Thats a nice piece of art but impossible from a development point of view.

Re-drawing sprites at a higher resolution is an extremely time consuming process (just look at KOF XIIs development cycle against previous versioins) not to mention costly which is why we get some of the ugly crap on XBLA. Personally I'd be happier if said games had a fake scanlines option.

Remove the bluring from that image, and it's gorgeous.

Wasn't there a project to recreate Sonic The Hedgehog 2 in HD on PC?

            What's happened to it?

Yeah there was/is but it's nothing like the image above. They're just redrawing everything at a higher resolution and removing the soul.

Not sure if this is from what you meant but I remember seeing this a while back and would love for it to actually happen.

I don't think so, they're just as dedicated fans as you and I, if not more.

It's nothing to do with how big a fan they are :/

Well yes it is, if they're big fans, they're going to take more care in recreating the game, which if you look, they are being extremely obsessive of the most minor of details that most people wouldn't even notice.

Yeah, they're getting all the details and stuff, but that still doesn't preserve the game's soul.

Look at it. It's clean and crisp, certainly, but it's just ugly.

I really feel they caught a lot of what made Sonic so special in Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast.

They caught all the little touches that made the games look and play beautifully but mixed it into a 3D world. If Sonic Team let their imagination (What's left of it) run wild using those graphics, everything should slot together well.

Indeed. Although it's a noble and intresting project I'm affraid that screenshot does not do it justice at all. It reminds me of The Twin Sankes compared to Metal Gear Solid, it's all their and present but the game feels like a spit and polish job rather than a port or a full remake. Look how good Resident Evil turned out and the promise shown by Black Messa as an example of how to do a remake or reboot...

Also I'm not sure if anyone has clicked the link for the guy's artwork? He's done some brilliant stuff...
