The legalities aside (that's a larger debate in itself), it's still not a solution suitable for the average person. However, not trying to play the devil's advocate, but I don't think Sony have an obligation to provide a method of transferring games. It would be a nice gesture, but the PSP Go! isn't intended to be an upgrade path, the games operate on the format that they were designed for.

It will be my fourth UK PSP

I'm on my second Japanese (White) PSP. Never played the first one, no idea why I ended up with a second one.

Makes the fact I wouldn't say no to a PSP GO! even more baffling really.

It's titled the PspGo, in the mind of the average consumer they would expect the price to be somewhere closer in line with the current models, and to be able to get their umd's on there somehow.

That's a thought that occured to me today anyway, the sony rep was in with one earlier on today, i have to say it looks really nice in the flesh, but i tried holding it in a proper grip with it touching the inner palm of my hands and pressing the shoulder buttons is really uncomfortable, i wouldn't fancy playing for long holding it at my fingertips to enable access to the shoulders, i wish i'd asked the rep about the umd issue but i was too busy to stay and view whatever crappy presentation he had on his laptop, i've never fancied a psp anyway to be honest but wouldn't buy one at that price for sure

I was speaking to a manager in my local gamestation and he's said that Sony's reps have already told him that it's not going to be compatible with the UMD. Whether there's any proof in that, i'll let you decide.

I think it's safe to assume that the PSP Go won't be compatible with UMDs...

Obvious, it has no umd drive.

                    LOL

I knew what I meant to say but I wrote something else (wouldn't be the first time).

What I meant was that they were discussing whether there would be a good will scheme and the rep catagorically stated that there wouldn't be. As Sony sees the Go as a standalone unit to the normal PSP.

I don't particularly care about that myself as i have no UMDs anyway. What i want to know more importantly is the online catelogue on day 1.

Why is there this assumption though?

Really, it would be great if Sony gave us this option, but they're pushing this as a different unit targeting a different audience (whether we agree with this or not - I think Sony are kidding themselves and seeing a market that doesn't exist). That's why new revisions for the existing PSP have recently been announced. I'm certainly not normally the one to stick up for the 'big evil corporation', but the idea that Sony have an obligation to exchange our existing UMDs with digital copies, when these UMDs work fine with the hardware they were created for, really baffles me.

They make noise, sap batterylife and have loading times. I think these factors actually kill the convenience of a handheld. Therefore I think using UMD was wrong. I hated it from the beginning and saw no use in watching portable movies anyway.

But Sony keeps on supporting it, so its not like the early PSP adaptors get the shaft when it comes to a new release of GT or MGS. In fact, Dissidia CE box looks really good.

Well, to be fair, they did say there would be a way to transfer your games.

In any case it is fairly odd, surely, to release a new version of a console that can't play most of the games that currently exist for the system. That's bound to cause some confusion with consumers, isn't it? If your kid has a PSP and you're in a shop with a load of games that say PSP on the box, you'd sort of expect to be able to buy one for him.

Which is why these pieces shouldn't be available in regular gameshops. Doesn't make sense anyway, next to the much cheaper 3000.

I do think there is a market for the Go!. Its the market that downloads and play games on their iPod. These should be adults who don't really go to gameshops.
