I think the reason they are flat is because that is how they appear in the games levels, for instance Birdo is in the SMB2 stage and all the background characters are 2D.

As for save related trophies, I believe a site (PlanetGamecube I believe) was saying that there were ones for Mario Sunshine (with mario on yoshis back) and Metriod (with Samus without her helmet), they had pictures of the trophies too but I have not got them.

IIRC the metroid and mario ones were in the japanese version only

Which explains why the jap version has 2 more trophies

I have Japanese SSB DX and they never turned up. Unless of course I need to be running the game IN JAPANESE AND have JAPANESE saves of Metroid/SMS on the card?!
