That's just simply not true. It's not truer than saying the 16 bit generation was all 2D platformers and fighters.

I'm not going to make a list of games, but there are loads of other genres that have been very well supported this gen. What about RPGs (both Western and Japanese), Puzzles Games, RTS, 3D Fighters, Shooters (especially on XBLA/PSN), Flight games, Party Games, MMOs and brawlers?

If you remove the DS, RPGs haven't been that well supported. There's been a handful but not anywhere near the number we saw on PS1 and PS2. Mass Effect and Fallout 3 have been good quality but it would be easy to argue that F3 is leaning more towards FPS now than RPG

But why would you remove the DS? That's like saying if you remove the 360 and PS3, FPS have been poorly supported.

Plus there's the RPGs on the PC like The Witcher and we've got Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, Fallout New Vegas and Alpha Protocol all due in the next 12 months.

However a fair few of the better DS RPG's have been ports of older games e.g. Dragon Quest IV & V (ports of PS1 and PS2 games respectively), Chrono Trigger (port of a SNES game), whilst others have been updates/remakes of older games e.g. Final Fantasy III & IV.

Something Ive done for years with games is to never read previews. I only ever read about the news when their announced and make my mind up then pretty much. Then I might read of the odd review score when its released if Im ummming over it thats it but I still skim the review so I dont know much. For me that keeps my gaming exitement down to zero and I dont get disapointed whatsoever of it aint got x in etc.. I think you can overhype games way too much. The only one I did catch some stuff by mistake was GOW2 and funnily enough I was disapointed with it when I did play it.

Take Infamous and this week RF. Knew very little about infamous and RF I dunno any of the plot apart from its not on Earth and zero about it online as I just read titbit of news on it.

Maybe we all need to cut down in buying games due to not playing them properly.

SEGA Japan been stuck in a timewarp and only now coming round to multi platform developement . But you know I'll still say Virtual Fighter 5, Virtual Tennis III, Yakuza III , Valkyrie are pretty dame fine game , in fact Val is exceptional with its visuals , and Ueda -san project will turn quite a few heads I can tell you .

Also I think you're very that its all FPS or racing ECT. One could have said just the same inthe 16 bit day's , and how it was all Sport, RPG's and Platform games and very little else .

I think you need to stop thinking it's never be as good as the 'Glory days' and now its all FPS, Action adventure, Racing, music and Sports games
Get out and buy some software . You'll see its simply not true , even for the 360 .
Amazing for the 360, its now the system of choice for RPG and shooter , and is a area the Japanese are playing a massive part in .
And just what is so wrong with FPS and racers ? , its like knocking the Snes line up , for its brilliant range of Platform games and RPG's .

They're still brilliant game even if they fall in a popular genre . I happen to think COD IV is one of the best games I've ever played . I couldn't give a flying toss, if its another FPS , not when it done as well as that .

This generation the industry is desperately whoring itself out to both some vaguely defined "casual" audience and the manchildren who do genuinely want a 20th iteration of each and every one of their favourite decades-old franchises.

                So yeah!

At least we're getting some good fighters!

But the fighters aren't as good as 10/15 years ago

I can count loads of quality, new franchises created for the non "casual" audience in this generation:

                    Gears of War
                    Uncharted
                    Left 4 Dead
                    Little Big Planet
                    Dead Space
                    Mass Effect
                    Mirrors Edge
                    Saints Row
                    Valkyria Chronicles
                    Brutal Legend
                    Dragon Age

So again, I don't think the evidence stacks up.

None of those games inspire me with fun, I don't know if I agree with the OP, but I have a severe lack of enthusiasm for any games around at the moment and only own 2 PS3 games sans the odd cheap-o PSN title. That could tell you something about this generation, I also sold me Wii which was cobwebbing.

There's a decent amount of variety between those different franchises (and I didn't include new series like Crackdown, Bioshock or Assassin's Creed). If you think there's nothing fun there, then possibly your tastes are very narrow or you're going off gaming.

Which is a shame, but not necessarily damning on this generation.

I personally don't think this generation is any worse than the ones that preceded it.

What i have noticed is gamers are a lot more unreasonable/whiny/spoilt as the generations go on. They expect the gaming world to revolve around them & god help it if it dosen't, off to the internet wah wah wahhhh wheres my ice cream.

Game gets announced, game gets hyped online to stupid levels, game gets released, game gets torn apart & nitpicked because it never stood a chance against the hype.

I really wonder why some people even play games anymore if they are that unhappy with everything, just get a new hobby. And im not talking about anyone in particular before the paranoia tin foil hats come on.

This is absolutely correct, especially the bit in bold. Well said mate.

It's like the Grand Canyon up in here!

And you know what? It's going to get worse. A lot worse.
