World Super Police (AKA Kousoku Kidoutai) on PS2 - anyone played it??

Just a query about a game I've long been curious about. It's a PAL release, on a budget label, from a Japanese softco (I think...?), and it has decent cover art, simple yet quite classy, a prime example of a niche Jap game being marketed by Westerners who don't quite know what to do with it.

It has some cool Chase HQ-style screenshots on the back, which look pretty OK, quite colourful and neat with that Jap arcade simplicity, but I can't find anything else about it on the net, not a single review, just loads of links that promise reviews, tips, everything, but actually just have a void and just want you to click the link so you can up their hit rates.

I've seen it recently in a 3 for £10 PS2 sale. Now, £3.33 for a **** game is a waste to me. I've rather not splash the cash if it's PS2 Beverly Hills Cop-level ****, like the ultimate nadir, worse than dying from a painful, degenerative disease then being reincarnated as an incontinence pad. But if it's interesting, I'd probably give it a blast.

Has anyone played it, can tell me anything about it????

There's quite a few vids up on youtube of it, looks atrocious tbh. Would've loved Chase HQ 2 to have received a home convesrion on the other hand...

Been a while since I played it - but I have a Japanese copy. As I recall, most of it was in english. It was pretty bad, but kind of good bad I didn't pay a lot for it (though I payed more than you would be) and I think it was worth it!

Looks like it's published by Jaleco in Japan, like most of their games that description sounds about right, may have to try this seeing as it's cheap, as for a review the only one I can find is on a Portuguese blog here

Well, Friction described it as 'kind of good bad', which is what I was kind of expecting/wanting anyway. Welcoming, almost.

Jaleco always interest me, despite the weird disparities in their output. I mean, in retro terms, they did Rushing Beat (absolute ****e yet with an edge) and Dead Dance (classy SF2 ripoff, but lacking in content mega-ly), then did the ace Operation Logic Bomb, which lacked in areas, but was ace, very playable, and they also did arcade P-47, which lacked - again - but made up for it with one of the best sunsets in videogame history. They're...interesting, like Steve Davis, and Steve Davis is cool (at least in my book).

And that Portuguese-translated blog review you offered, Pharfetchd, it is incredible!

Mind-altering use of the English language, yet it gets the point across totally.

Anyway, thanks for your replies of my obscure question!

Yeah I like a lot of the old Jaleco stuff as well despite a lot of it being average or below, The Game Paradise on Saturn is one of my favourite games by them, unfortunately Jaleco is in name only these days as the original company sold off the games divison and are only involved in finance and real estate now, still at least the new company is staying with tradition and putting games of this quality out there.

Anyway thanks for the thread, would never of known about this otherwise, I've just bought it for £2.50 off ebay so I'll see how bad it is soon, it does remind me a bit off Ray Tracers and I love that game so I'm sure I'll get some enjoyment from this.

Sorry I can't remember too much - been a good couple of years since I played it now. I do remember the dialogue was terrible as you'd expect - made funnier by the fact the box said it was in English as an 'English lesson' to help Japanese people learn English Something like that at least.

It's very much one of those games like those in the 'Simple' series, pretty cheap, pretty crappy for the most part, and yet brilliant because of it.

I went through a phase were I got loads of games like - takes pride of place with other gems like 'Critical Velocity', 'Jacked' (which is very Road Rash like) and something or other 'Security Police'. I might have to dig my PS2 out now to relive the joys

Well that Portuguese review ends with "it's one of the worst games yet released on the PS2". Glowing praise indeed.

Just watched a few vids of this, does it play similar to something like Driver, also whats with the inclusion of the Ridge Racer track I saw in one of the videos.

Again it's been a while since I played it, so going from memory. It was pretty much drive from point a to point b over and over. Terrible script, awful voice acting too

The Ridge track probably is there on account of it being one of Namco's finest titles Also got some nice renders as I recall and from looking at the back of the box. Not just that, one of the cars you drive is called a 'Sprout'

Cheers, sounds a bit sh*t, I may have to buy it if I can find it cheap enough

World Super Police arrived yesterday, it's got to be one of the funniest games I've played, it looks like it was put together by a team of 2 people in 3 days, ****e graphics, loads of pop-up, there was one bit where I was driving on a straight bit of road and a tunnel just suddenly popped up in front of me, it's almost as bad as Daytona on the Saturn.

The dialogue and story looks like it was done using babelfish as well, I did switch the speech to Japanese for a while but it's far better listening to it in English. One of the best bits of Engrish is when you get a new cop on your team and it says "You have fresh member"

Theres some nice ideas though, you can set the formation tactics of the cars on your team, choose the best team members for a specific mission and set what type of vehicles each member will drive, you can also replay missions to get better ranks and do training to improve your stats.

First few missions just seemed to be a case of pursing a vehicle and keeping up with them until they reach a police road block, I'm now stuck on the boss for mission 5 at the minute, it probably wouldn't be too hard if it wasn't for the fact that your f*cking team mates keep getting in the way when your trying to shoot.

Some of the translation on the missions are odd as well, e.g one mission says whatever you do don't open fire on the vehicle, they don't want to kill the driver but to complete the mission you have to ram the vehicle until it blows up.

It's pretty bad but for some really odd reason I can't stop firing the game up for another quick go.

Heh so it was well worth the cash then

I think you need games that are terrible to appreciate the good ones - and for comedy too!

You make me want to dig out my Japanese PS2 now so I can remind myself what I've been missing Oh and get some more Critical Velocity in too

Kudos to all of you for responding to my insignificant thread about an insignificant game!

I bought this game/****/game today for ?1.95, albeit a scratched and tatty PAL version, and I cannot wait to give it a blast.

I'm just thinking...with all these downloadable retro titles 'available' on Wii/360/PS3/PSP/DSi...you're paying quite a lot, often to get ****...there's so much scope...?1.95 per **** game, but to hold that turd in your hand, feel the bulk of it, stare at its artwork (which is often brilliant). Man...

I OWN my World Super Police, make no mistake.
