    Questions about Counter-Strike: Condition Zero

I decided to post this here rather than the PC section because this isn't really a technical question. Please move if I have made a mistake.

Anyway, I used to play Counter-Strike on LAN with friends, and feel like replaying it for some nostalgia. I would prefer to play single player because I don't fancy trying my luck against the elites online, hence my interest in Condition Zero.

You can buy Condition Zero on Steam for ?5.99, or you can buy a package of Counter-Strike 1.6, Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, Day of Defeat, Deathmatch Classic and Ricochet for ?8.99. In all honesty, I'm not really interested in the non-CS content, and I'd be better off spending the extra ?3 on a beer. However, the CS 1.6 may be useful one day.

I have been informed that the multiplayer in Condition Zero is identical to 1.6, so I do not need to purchase 1.6 standalone. Can someone confirm this?

    Thanks.

I'm not entirerly sure becuase I havent played it for ages, but If youre wanting to play counter strike, wouldnt you be better off getting half Life 2 so you can play Counter Strike Source?

I would recommened, as I did the same, buy the retail UK package Half Life 2 GOTY Edition.

It comes with Half Life 2, Half Life Source, Half Life Deathmatch and Counter Strike Source.

If you PC or Laptop is up to running it, I would go for CS:S over CS:CZ.

Depends on who you are playing with in the future, a lot of people think CS 1.6 is a lot better than Source.

My understanding at the time was that it was compatible with 1.6 multiplayer, though I haven't tried it. If you haven't tried Day of Defeat though I recommend it, it's an absolutely superb mod well ahead of its time with destructable routes through the levels, great graphical design and some superb levels. Not sure what the community is like now though.

The package on Steam you mention for ?5.99 includes both CS 1.6 and Condition zero. As I think you have to have 1.6 to play CZ anyway.

My primary motivation for buying this is the single player, just for a nostalgia kick. I don't really fancy playing online. However, it's not inconceiveable that I'd play CS online again. I'm basically just asking if the multiplayer in CZ is compatible with the standard 1.6 everyone plays.

However, I have noticed that what Malc says is correct

If your question was referring to whether or not you can play 1.6 players with condition Zero, then I do believe they can not be played together. As in their servers are all completely different on Steam.

No, it's not; you do not need 1.6 to play Condition Zero. They're separate games, and CZ was sold at retail separately from 1.6.

Condition Zero's online section is just CS 1.6 anyway. My cousin has CZ whereas I have plain-old 1.6 (from the Half Life Generations boxset) and we played online together just fine.

On a side note I do like CS:S (Playing de_rats with the Matrix DVD up on the shelf that you can knock down is pretty special) but my cousin and other mates who I played online with all had 1.6 so I just kept with that (also because my laptop at the time had the fan vent on the right next to the mouse so playing CS:S caused it to run at 1.6GHz and warm up my hand with the hot air whereas CS 1.6 could be played just fine at 500MHz and the fan relaxed!)
