Ahh the progress of lara over time; triangle boobs, slightly more rounder boobs, more realistically sized boobs, wet boobs and finally muddy boobs

Course some say that the games have also improved over time.....but really who the hell pays attention to that

//ontopic good review , i agree, great game, however i did buy it on the pretense of goreki providing the trailer theme, but they didnt do the damn ingame music, booo

I do remember playing this game through and enjoying it. Not amazing, but one of the few games I actually bothered to complete. This would suggest its a short game for gamers who read this forum.

My only complaints about the review is there is no mention of how naff the driving sections are, or am I mistaking this for the other Tomb Raider?

Good review and, for once, one I agree with. It was one of my favourite games of last year, and easily one of the most visually impressive and immersive. Best Tomb Raider yet. Definately.

Great review Duncan, one of the most engaging I've read for some time on NTSC-UK.

Not only that but I fully agree with your opinion, it's a brilliant game and apart from this site & Edge, it was underrated by a large portion of the press and public.

Great to hear it praised on the website!

I played the first bit the other day and thought the controls were glitchy and crap so ditched it. Was I wrong?

                Nope.

This must be one of the most Marmite Tomb Raider game ever.

I picked the game up on day one since I am (or was) a big Tomb Raider fan - and I even started the first-play thread on here too - but everything about it is a sheer disappointment.

I read the review and while it was well written by Duncan, I just disagreed with some of the more 'positive' remarks and the score at the end made me grunt in disbelief.

If anything, it is a step backwards from Anniversary and Legend; this one is a mess with awkward camera angles, more visuals glitches than any other game I have played (Lara got stuck in simple scenery more times than I can count) and the obvious things you would think you could climb or scale upon are non-climbable. I even felt bored whilst playing the game.

In other words a game that went gold whilst still broken in places.

Sure, I gained some enjoyment when the experience remained glitch-free but usually in a Tomb Raider game when you solve a puzzle or find a well hidden secret, you get a sense of accomplishment but in Underworld I nary gained that feeling at all and is one of the games biggest failing.

                There is always next time...

The controls are no more glitchy and crap in this than literally every single other tomb raider game in existance.

Turning and jumping for example have always felt stiff and rigid - not too dissimilar to the original Prince of Persia.

For what it's worth however, Underworld is probably the best game of the series I've played to date and agree pretty much with everything in the review.

I read this last night. I'd planned to get it originally (Loved Legend and Anniversary), but went cool on it after mixed reviews and reports of the game being 'broken'. Have to say this has my interest again.

One question, does the game hold up OK without the DLC? I'll be going for the PS3 version, so it's obviously not an option.

I'm just off to read the review even though I haven't played the game. I could have but I just don't want to further disappoint myself as it would have to be the PS2 version. This, from all the sources I've read and people who's judgement I trust, is a pretty poor effort.

As somebody who often hangs out at some dedicated and specialist TR forums I can say with truth that you'll hard pressed to find any long term TR fan who rates Underworld as amongst the best of the series. More than that even those who thought Legend was a good game gave Underworld a typically luke warm response.

That is the general impression I've had of the game reading other reviews too. Not that it is bad, just that it isn't anything remotely special, coming off a poor second when compared to this generation's action/adventure benchmark: Uncharted: DF.

I thought they were worse in Underworld than the preceding two games. I seemed to get stuck a fair bit, with Lara refusing to move for a few seconds until an animation had reset or something. The game was okay, but it seemed to go on longer than I really wanted, particularly because the best bits were near the start. It's not a bad game, but it feels a bit rushed and unfinished to me.

i still hate that they changed the underwater contols from the original!!!

but i've come to accept that the main control system will be glitchy in any tomb raider game.

i thought the review was good, but i would score it 1 less.

It's interesting to repeatedly see comments about glitchy controls as, like many others, I got on fine with them and had very few problems. Indeed it's the only Tomb Raider game I've played where I felt confident controlling Lara.
