    PSP Emulators

Well I've finally sorted out an original 1003 PSP with CFW so looking for some emulator recommendations ready for when I go on my hols in October

I'm not into hard work so dont want to have to use Cache files (as I havent got a clue how these work) which I think means no CPS or MVS games but I'm mostly interested in SNES/MD/PC-E anyway so if there are good versions of those then I'll be a really happy bunny

So what should I be looking for??

    Thanks in advance

You should have got a slim = no cache files for cps2, but still for mvs.

picodrive is a pretty suave emulator for megadrive, plus it emulates sega cd too so you can crack open the snatcher, luna 1 and 2, sonic cd etc.

There is a great GBA emulator too but once again, the name escapes me. fantastic emu though and worth the asking price just for the translated mother 3 (easily the best rpg I've played in about 10 years) one thing to note with the gba emu though is that you need the right BIOS for it. there are a lot of rubbish bios files around that have really low compatibility.

some of the pc engine emus are decent. been using hugo and another one... can't remember which but they are both good.

Snes, I never bother with because its still annoyingly slow and you really notice it due to the sound slowing down and speeding up. but if you do want to give it a bash, try just get the latest snestyl thingy.

other emu's that i like and use are:

Rane (neogeo pocket) which is excellent.

masterboy (great ooking and professional emu that plays sega master system, gamegear and gameboy color black and white)

mvs, cps1 and cps2. the cache thing isnt really that annoying to sort to be honest. I'm not really a computer genius and I didnt have any problems with working it out. the only problems that might transpire is the amount of memory that the cache files produce. make sure you have a big memory stick!

also, probably the greatest thin you can do with a hacked up psp is to convert your old psx games and they are almost always emulated perfectly and look amazing on the psp screen. Recently put the translated version of policenauts on mine! that with einhander and tactics ogre... gaming bliss my man.

Ideally I'd have got the Slim but since this cost me under ?40 including a 4GB mem card it'll do me fine

Nota at all, as you can get a MS Duo to dual micro SDHC card converters very cheaply and then get two 8gb micro SDHC cards for a song and there voila! 16gb worth of gaming goodness in your hands.

            Ooooh that sounds promising
Off to hunt them down now

            Thanks for that.

does that definately work though? I'm sure I heard omething about there being a maximum size for micro sd's? maybe I'm wrong or they've fixed it or something. I remember there being some reason why I didn't go that route personally when I looked into it about a year ago.

Well I have an 8gb micro SDHC card in an adapter and that works fine for me (for about the last year), but these are reported to work with the PSP:

Dual micro SDHC to MS pro due apdapter

                The comments look positive.

Here are a few of my personal favs...

MD/MCD - Picodrive - mentioned already, but I'll give it another vote.

SNES - Snes9xTYL 0.4.2 ME - the worst emulator of the bunch by far. Most games suffer from minor sound problems and if there are any mode7 effects at all performance takes a major hit.

PCE - PCEforPSP 0.82 alpha - badass PC-Engine emulator that's updated constantly. I haven't tried PSPHugo but I've read that PCEforPSP has superior emulation of CD games while PSPHugo handles card games better.

GBA - uopSP kai - unoffical update of the gpSP GBA emulator. Runs beautifully and has excellent compatibility (I've yet to encounter a game that wouldn't run). Needs a GBA bios file to run.

NES - NesterJ v1.11 - one of the finest emulators on the system, imo.

Arcade - FBA4PSP v12.4 - plays Cave shooters such as Dodonpachi, ESPRade, Guwange, Dangun Feveron etc.

Arcade - CPS1PSP/CPS2PSP/MVSPSP - the best emulators on the system, imo. Silky smooth emulation.

Creating the cache files for CPS2/MVS involves running an .exe that comes with the respective emulators, from which you select the zipped rom that you wish to create a cache for. The app will then tell you whether or not the game requires a cache file since they are only required for larger games such as D&D - Shadow Over Mystara, Battle Circuit, Metal Slug etc. Once it has finished creating the cache file you then place it in the "CACHE" folder of the desired emulator. It's that simple .

PSX - First off, you need to grab an .ISO of the game you want and convert it to an eboot.pbp file (essentially a PSP executable) using PSX2PSP v1.4.2. Once you've created the eboot.pbp load it using an app called Popsloader.

Forgot to mention that PSX2PSP requires an eboot of Hot Shots Golf 2 to be renamed "Base.pbp" and placed in the "Files" folder for it to work properly. I can send you the aforementioned file if you don't fancy rummaging around the net for it, just shoot me a PM.

And finally, most of the above emulators can be downloaded here:

                  http://pspslimhacks.com/psp-emulators/

For the PCE emulator, go here:

                  http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/sho...d.php?t=239726

                  Hope that helps.

hey black wizardd, A few questions:

I'm using the same snes emu as you but its just not up to par compared to the other emus. metroid is pretty good but I always get jittering, minor low down and screen tearing on almost every game. is it the same for you or have you tweaked the settings to get it to run better?

I've had the same problems. Still playable, but far from perfect. I also find that snes9x is really quite unstable. It regularly cuts out for me and I have to do a reset.

The most common glitches I've encountered have been sound related. Almost all games have minor problems in that area. Honestly, I don't really use the SNES emulator very often because it's hands down the worst of the bunch.

I also don't have many games for it because I had to get rid of the likes of Mario Kart, Starfox, F-Zero, SMW 1/2 due to mode7 emulation being pants, which left me with the likes of SCV 4, Assault Suit Valkyen, TMNT: TiT, Super Metroid and Sunset Riders which all run pretty well (minor sound glitches etc), although Metroid is definitely the worst of the bunch because it has some mode7 effects which really kill performance.

I think I'll edit my original post because I'm starting to think I was a bit too forgiving in my criticism!

I wish to **** someone would make a decent snes eumalator. it's easily the most desirable platform out there with the highest content of best 16bit games. I wonder what the hold up is? That dude who did the neogeo, cps 1 and 2 stuff should read my post and take on the challenge. If he can perfectly emulate those beasts then I'm sure he could code a flawless snes emu in an afternoon.

I bumped an old topic in headlines, but this one seems better suited.

Searching the internet has given me hundreds of conflicting results, some very out of date (circa 2005).

                              I'm looking for the best:

GB and GBC emulator for the PSP.

NeoGeo Pocket Colour emulator for the PSP.

I've seen RIN recommended a lot for GB, but some sources claim 1.32 is the latest, whereas I've seen other sources going as high as 3.3 (by another author who took it over? I have no idea).

A lot of websites seem discontinued, and there's no central hub which I know which is 100% up-to-date.
