I got to the very end of Red Faction all ready to go in and kick some final boss ass, for some reason I decided to save, but after doing so I deleted the save and well you can guess the rest...

(the game went into Gamestation the next day - no way was I going through all that again!)

My mates official mc59 lost all its data in the sub-zero when he was taking up to Greg's house each and every night. He lost his lvl.90+ character on PSO.

In a rush to try out the jap. version of Wind Waker I completely forgot about taking out my US 251 memcard first. Goodbye Metroid Prime 100% savefile + GBA features unlocked.

Another time my mate wiped all of my complete Jap. F-Zero X data with half of the SGs beaten. We were having a 4-player sesh when they all decided to get drunk and start playing the "Who's pressing the B button!?" game instead when trying to select courses/craft etc. Someone went ape**** and backed out all the to the options screen and erased my data by accident (not knowing japanese) - I was fuming at that one.

Luckily my Perfect Dark data has lasted the test of time. I have that backed up onto memory card thankfully incase something terrible does happen.

It's so stupid how you can't copy some GC gamefiles (GX for instance) - what if you simply want to back-up? ft:

Accidently deleted my Xenogears save file (80 hours in, right before the end) but managed to get a copy of my friends save who was near enough in the same position as me, but I lost all that personalised stuff you know.

My mate thought it would be funny to sell all my cars in Gran Turismo 2 and then hit the save button, I was like "****!!" So I yanked my mem card out of the PSOne after being on the saving screen for like a split second but when I tried to load it, I got a curropt save error. Nob ft:

Accidently saved over my Legend Of Dragoon data when I was on disc 3 aswell.

I keep a seperate memory card for backups now

So let me get this straight-
turning on a modded US/Jap Gamecube containing a memory card of a different region to that you have selected via the region switch will erase all saved data? Is that right?

I'm getting my first Jap game (WE6) in a few days, the thought of forgetting to change the memory card and losing all my hard-earned data for F Zero GX, SC2, Metroid Prime, Waverace, Mario Golf and Mario Sunshine makes me not wanna bother.

                  No.

You can have Japanese or English language formatted memory cards, not exactly the same thing as region encoded (pal and US games can share memory cards). The memory cards themselves are regionless, its the language formatting thats important.

If you run a Japanese game with an English memory card plugged in, it will ask if you want it formatted. In Japanese. Right at the start of the game, probably.

So you see, wiping your English formatted memory card by running Japanese games is a very easy thing to do, especially if you don't understand Japanese.

To make matters worse, the Freeloader can save Japanese game saves onto English formatted memory cards, but the instructions state the opposite. Worse still, Freeloader screws up saving with some games, and asks you to format the memory card every time you play, no matter what language it is (Mr Driller Drill Land, for one).

I think we have all lost important saves at one time :\ The amount of times I had to restart FF7 due to loosing my save data (due to my sister deleting it constantly due to me accidently wiping her RRT4 save). Only game thing that really got me frustrated was Suikoden II, played for ages and ages without saving, then the psx froze I've never gone back to replay the game.

                        Yeah, of course.
Man, I'm glad my brother is into Fishing and Bird Watching and not my computer games.

Hmm. That certainly wasn't the answer I was hoping for.

If I use my switched Gamecube for Jap games I definately see myself erasing my US data, especially at the weekends when I've had a few drinks and a few smokes. After all the time and effort that has gone into getting the AX craft on F-Zero GX it's something I'm really not willing to chance.

I think maybe it will be better to get a very inexpensive, second-hand japanese Gamecube just for playing jap games. ft: It seems nothing is ever straightforward.

Games don't format cards automatically, though as I say they will ask if they can format cards of the wrong language.

Just put bloody great stickers on them marked ENG and JPN, and check the system menu everytime you switch region just in case.

Its not worth getting a second cube for, anyway.
