Anyway.. question on future setup

If I was to buy a new PS3 near Christmas/post Christmas when the good deals are on- can I...

transfer all my game saves/downloads across?
use a new psn username or I am tied to my original?

You can transfer your stuff across only to your existing account if created on another machine. If you change your PSN name or create a new account, you start from scratch. You cannot transfer save data from one PSN account to another as far as i know.

Some saves are locked to a single machine, others are not.

RE5 was locked but I believe they patched it later, Demon's Souls is locked, it depends what saves you have.

It depends on your game of course. You can find out by going to the Save Data Utility and pressing triangle, then information and it should say whether it'll allow you to copy the save file or not.
