Hang on, so Vita screens look blotchy and misty in the dark?

Not noticable unless the sceen is dark, Uncharted loading screens being a good example. I have googled, and not found any conclusive information.

I have a feeling the unit was opened before I got it, as there were fingerprints on the screen, the seal sticked was half peeled back and also there was no plastic screen protector on the device. Does anyone know if they come with any protective screen stickers normally?
I think the blotchy areas are actually image compression marks when JPEG comp. is used too much, it looks that way to me anyway.
I've only seen it on a couple of lumines loading screens so far, but when I choose black as a bg in the home screen it is fine.

Guys - quick question - I'm in Kenya for a few weeks and don't have any wi-fi access. Do you need to do an update over wi-fi immediately, or only if you try to go online?

You have to update the first time you start your vita yeah. Don't think you can skip it, but could be wrong.

Just to answer my own question here, if you're wondering if you can transfer PSP game save data to your Vita - yes you can and it's actually pretty easy. Someone posted the method for me over at Wipeoutzone. Here it is -

                1. Start a psp game on your vita and create a save file (doesn't matter what you just need a save)

                2. Connect it to PC and open content manager

                3. Transfer the save to the PC

                4. Find out where that save was transferred to (you can also open content manager options on yor PC by clicking it in the taskbar down at the bottom right and it will have a folder listed). The folder is usually:

C:/> users > username > documents > PSVITA > PSAVEDATA > (a folder that just has numbers and letters) > in here is where you should find the psp saves

                5. Plug your PSP into your PC and find your save files ( folder is in PSP > SAVEDATA)

                6. Transfer the saves you want (or all of them) to the folder on PC that we found where the vita backs the psp saves to (the letter/number folder in PSAVEDATA)

                7. Open content manager on vita and choose PC -> PSVITA

                8. Choose applications > psp saves and check mark all the ones you want on your vita

And there you go. The Content Manager seems quick and does the job. I did have a problem with a couple of the Pure packs for some unknown reason but got them sorted. My old Wipeout Pure game save went over with no problem whatsoever.

That's what I thought i had heard, but thinking logically if I am not connected to the Internet, how does it know an update is available?

It won't, but it also won't let you log into your PSN account on the vita, so you'd have to use a temporary one. Which is exactly what you have to do when you first turn it on anyway in order to get it to update. I've no idea what that would mean for games, I assume you'd keep your save games when you eventually get back into wifi and log in.

Found out from PS Site FAQs that the PS Store videos download in SD when you use Vita. Disapointed but I guess I can see the reasoning. 720p too much for Vita and its an odd native resolution for Sony to store a Vita specific version. Best bet to try it out is to take a 720p video myself and re-encode it down to Vitas screen resolution. I will give it a try and post results on here on the off chance anybody has space left on their sticks for films

I guess it depends on what you're watching. Even if it is only SD, the freebie episode of South Park looked so bright and crisp on the screen, you'd swear it was HD.

Funny that my screen looks prefect in the dark, i guess i just might not have noticed, but its very unlikely as i'm really fussy about image quality.

                          Strange.

well got the vita along with blazblue and rayman

first things that have really struck me...the picture quality is really really good blazblue and rayman look fantastic have to say for some reason i find it as good as what i see on hd tv ...going to get some screen covers though dont want to smudge the screen

One thing that did surprise me was how good the d-pad was works very well with blazblue though i do find it a bit to close to the left analogue stick
