    Is Rez the only one?

I was looking at Rez on Wikipedia the other day and it got me thinking, is Rez the only one of its kind? I know theirs a lot of rythym based games out their, but Rez sells itself as a "Synaesthesia experience"; the only one that comes close in my mind is Vib Ribbon for the PS1....so does anyone know of any others?

Well its certainly unique. Perhaps it may be the only music based on rails actual shooter.
Similar titles are Tempest 2000 and Every Extend Extra.

      THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!

There are quite a few games around that dynamically have you 'create' the music from how you play. Space Invaders Extreme and Lumines are two such examples.

There are also games that dynamically change the music based on your performance. Some examples are Parappa the Rapper (there are 4 or so concurrent music track it switches between), NiGHTs (changes the tone of the music) and Ar Tonelico 3 will apparently have a pretty advanced version of this which even changes the vocals in line with your situation.

What about Frequency and Amplitude on the PS2? Those are also excellent games.

I believe there is some indie game called Synaesthesia. It isn't exactly like Rez but I guess there are some similarities.

You could also play Panzer Dragoon Orta while listening to trance I guess.

Funny this thread came up as I was reading this article on forbes regarding the most groundbreaking games.
It mentioned that Parappa was the first rhythm based game which I wasn't sure about.

The list includes the following which are a bit of a mixed bag but what do you expect from Forbes.

                Spacewar! (Steve Russell, 1962)
                Pong (Atari, 1972)
Adventure (William Crowther and Don Woods, 1976)
                Legend of Zelda (Nintendo, 1986)
                Tetris (Alexey Pajitnov, 1984)
                Dune II (Virgin Interactive, 1992)
                Wolfenstein 3D (Apogee Software, 1992)
                Super Mario 64 (Nintendo, 1996)
                PaRappa the Rapper (Sony, 1996)
                Ultima Online (Electronic Arts, 1997)
                The Sims (Electronic Arts, 2000)
Grand Theft Auto III (Rockstar Games, 2001)
Scrabulous (Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla, 2005)
                Wii Sports (Nintendo, 2006)

Much as I adore it I never really got the idea of Rez as any kind of music creation game. It barely qualifies as one in most respects - you do far more to 'build' a tune in Lumines, or Frequency, or any number of other titles.

Rez is a shooter not a music creation game. Neither is Lumines really, it just loops the same piece of music until you clear a line and add some sound effects over the top.
Its just a clever use of sound.

I pretty much agree but there's a little bit more to that side of Lumines than that, IIRC. There's multiple loops, I'm sure, and the FX you get when you clear pieces are extra parts to the music - synth riffs, drum fills or what have you. Rez adds nothing other than a few FX which are largely superfluous, and doing well sounds little different to doing poorly.

Yeah Lumines does add a few extra bits depending on the level of the success for sure but the actual music is always the same.
Either way I love them both.

You can also count Everyday Shooter in the same category.

By the way the music isn't always the same in Lumines... if you reach a certain level of chaining it will often kick in to a chorus or bridge or some other part of the melody that you haven't heard so far.

Parappa was the first rhythm action game. It all started there.
