Playstation RPG's for 2010

Personally I think out of the more traditional RPG's out this year (ie any Bioware stuff and J-RPG's) I'm gonna go straight for Final Fantasy XIII & maybe give ME2 a try then skip the rest. I find it to be a really tired and rigidly old genre these days but having not really done FF since FFX it might make a change for me.

RPGs for this year off the top of my head:
Ar Tonelico 3 (possibly a winter release in the west) (PS3)
FFXIII (ps3/360)
Tales of Vesperia enhanced edition (PS3)
Sakura Taisen (Wii, US PS2)
Lunar : Harmony of the Silver Star (PSP)
Mass Effect 2 (PC/360)
White Knight Chronicles (PS3)
Shin Megami Tensei game (unlikely for the west this year) (PS3)
Atelier Rorona (PS3)
Resonance of Fate (PS3/360)
Fragile (Wii)
NinoKuni (DS)
Dragon Quest IX (DS)
Absolute Hero (PSP)
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP)

The JRPG scene has been hurt by companies flooding the DS. They've been splitting teams and churning out RPGs made in 6-9 months on the DS rather than doing major projects.
There're scores of RPGs for the DS but only a handful of really good, memorable ones (especially if you exclude remakes). Not quite shovelware but they're not putting anywhere near the work in they would for a full console release.
Now that the DS is less profitable and on its way out, the Wii is seen as not all that profitable for third parties and the PS3 has taken hold in Japan, we should start seeing lots more big titles on the console.

I know everyones pushing for RPGs to progress and change but I still have a soft spot for the older RPG style of random encounters and turn based combat.
Even if it's primative, it's something obvious that always seperated an RPG from the common Action game for me. Modern RPGs are blending into Action games with stats overkill, so the term RPGs loosing it identity a bit.
No that I ever really understood the term RPG, as any game with a character allows you to take the role of and play the game.
Anyway. If I manage to finish Demon's Souls this year I'll give Final Fantasy13 a try in 2010.

I have no problem with turn based combat but single battles that take over 5 mins are a big no no. I'm not keen on random encounters, I like the enemies on screen with the hit them first you get advantage scenario.
For me I don't mean the RPG needs to change, just so many are poor in execution so far. I have I.U and Last Remnant and both are awful looking games, and by that I mean they look worse in SD than many PS2 titles certainly in terms of clarity and design.
The only one J-Rpg wise I haven't tried is Lost Oddysee but I have heard its a terribly slow game. Magna Carta 2 is meant to be pretty good also.

None, IMHO RPGs are a relic from the SNES days and they don't appeal to me at all. Some of the plots and art styles are appealing but the gameplay mechanics (especially the battle systems) have no place in modern gaming for me... Now if we could get a Valkyria Chronicles Third-Person Shooter or if Final Fantasy went down the Borderlands route I'd be laughing.

Originally posted by FullSpecWarrior View PostIt's not just the JRPGs either. Dragon Age is very good but it's as generic as you like. It's like they don't even think of straying form the formula. That said, a generic RPG with a great story and excellent execution will get me to part with cash easily!

Real-time, "mash the buttons" combat isn't the evolution of turn-based combat. They're two entirely different things, designed to do different things. I don't want RPG games turn to action/shooter games (like what happened to Fallout 3, a series that was a classic, turn-based roleplaying game) there's already too much of them on the market.
I do however think that JRPGs, especially of the current gen are unoriginal and uninteresting (to the point that I'm not even interested in playing them at the moment) and that they need to do something to give new blood to the whole genre.

Strategic battle systems are great, they force you to use your brain to make decisions to survive. That is the gameplay, its not all about shooting and jumping but then even Mario did that in 1985.

I just want Grandia to do what it did to me when Grandia 2 came out on the DC. Although, now I want it to look even prettier on the PS3
I first got introduced to the turn based system when I discovered Chrono Trigger, but i think a good RPG, needs to have a charm/quality to it. Whether it be graphical style, quaint story telling or otherwise, its this overall theme that eventually draws me into the game and engages me. Im a sucker for a good story, and have been longing for a decent 'adventure' in the style of a good ole turn based fighting system for a while now.
I adored Fallout 3, as it was again my first introduction the the fallout world, but i think i understand where people who do not like the dramatic change from the original come from - I am of the same mind set when it comes to Resident Evil, the change upset me a lot as it was like a completely different game and to some extent alienated me.
But as RPG 'evolve' I think so too must the gamer. Moving on with the times is something iv'e learnt to do in gaming, as the type of games that I had grown up playing when I was younger are drastically reduced in number.
I have found myself accepting whatever changes in play style have been implemented (and without preconceptions about game XYZ) I no longer overly compare it with game ABC, whilst looking back with rose tinted memories. It has now allowed me to appreciate and most importantly enjoy it for what it is - an modern day RPG.
