Apparently there is a 3.1 update which adds online play and suchforth. However when I boot the disc I get no notification, neither can I find any update on the PSN.

You can't, Sony withdrew it and closed the servers on the 30/07/2009. I still have the email I got on the 01/07/2009 giving notice.
Oh and you can blame it on the release of Motostorm 2. -

On the UK version at least, you have single player, online on main menu, when you click online and choose server it connects and then autodownloads an update,

TBH I forgot that they had done it so when I re-bought the game a couple of months ago thinking I could get all the updates again, I found I couldn't. Checked the inbox tied to my Japanese PSN account and found the email sitting there.Comment
