Natal can **** right off. Playing games without a control pad is HERESY.

As this seems to now be a Move/Natal thread I thought I'd post this here. Some new info has apparently been released by Microsoft yesterday which seems to suggets that people are going to need to be 4 meters away from the camera for it to work at it's optimum.
I italicised the word apparently as the article is based on information obtained from Microsoft rather than being directly from them and it just sounds a bit daft to me. I know when they usually show people playing the red ball game they are around that distance away but I'm hoping it's just because they are early versions which will improve before release as having to stand 4 meters away certainly won't be suitable for my house.

Dunno but Natal Project Director Alex Kipman said 48 at E3 for burnout
The highlight of Microsoft's E3 press conference - apart from Gepetto Molyneux and his talking boy - was undoubtedly Pr…

Originally posted by Flabio View PostI think thats a misinterpretation. What they're actually saying is that the maximum range of the camera is 4m. Not that you have to stand 4m away.
It's been suggested elsewhere that what Craig Mundie (Microsoft?s Chief of Research) is suggesting with that figure is that due to the technology being used which requires a fairly narrow aperture on the cameras you do need to be 13ft away to get a standing adult in the frame.
I'm not sure myself though as there's been so few facts released to the public so people are having to create their own information from all the disparate facts that are out there.
Hopefully there will finally be some solid facts for both systems at E3 though as both companies are going to have to start selling these concepts to their public pretty soon.
I'm still not really convinced by either Move or Natal but I'm not going to be anything but open minded about both until they give me a reason to be disappointed with them.
I find the two systems to be almost completely unrelated though.
With Move it's essentially just a different shaped controller and I can quite imagine playing some games with it already. Until I see it in action with games that I'm interested in and know that it works well it's little more than an interesting idea.
Natal seems very different to me, I really can't imagine myself playing games with it but with the videos they've shown so far there's nothing when it comes to control that excites me about it. I've found the videos they've shown to be pretty awful and I find it very easy to lose interest in anything at all that Peter Molyneux sounds enthusiastic about.
What does excite me about Natal though is it's apparent ability to read people's emotions. I don't know how well it's going to work or even if there are developers who will be able to incorporate it in a game and make it really do something but I'd very much like it to work well.
In the end though, even if both of these projects fail miserably it's not going to affected me in any way. I certainly won't buy them and I'll still be able to play the games that I want to play right now.
Although there has been quite a bit of negativity from some areas for both of the projects which I can understand, in all honestly I'm really glad that both of these companies are willing to invest and take risks on projects such as these. If people don't want the hardware it's the easiest thing in the world to not buy it so no harm done.

What concerns me about this is that it is essentially a peripheral, whereas the Wii offers motion-based gaming out of the box.
To play Move, existing PS3 owners will need to shell out for all the extras, which is likely to fragment the market between those that have Move and those that don't. PS3 developers are going to need to be certain there is a big enough uptake before spending money making games for a small portion of the machine's market.
Sony needs to launch with something that really distinguishes itself from the Wii (beyond theory and tech demos) to really encourage anybody to buy into this. MS' Natal, OTOH is at least attempting to put a unique slant on motion-based play rather than simply copying and tweaking the Wii remote.
I wonder when Sony's balance board "variant" will come out?
