This didn't sound right, so I went trawling the depths of IGN's archives and sure enough there was much anticipation leading up to the release of Half-Life. No one tried to keep it a secret at all. Here's a link if proof is needed. Sorry.

I think the best kept secret in modern times was Shenmue on the Saturn , I don't remember any mag, or any gaming site even getting a sniff about it .

Quite impressed with how long Microsoft kept the likes of Lost Planet or the 1st Forza quite. Even though staff have been working on them for a number of years , before being shown to the Public

Appreciate that it's not out yet, but I'm impressed Capcom have kept quiet on MvC3 for so long given that people have supposedly been working on it for a year.

Blizzard did alright with Starcraft 2 didn't they? I know it was announced a few years ago but I think it had been in on and off development for something like 4 years before anyone knew about it.

US Saturn launch. April 1995, 5 months before expected.

Of course it pissed off all the third party developers, alienated a huge US retail chain, scuttled the 32x and probably directly lead to their leaving the hardware biz 5 years later.

              But it WAS a surprise.

I seem to remember Gran Turismo, God of War and GTAIII coming pretty much out of leftfield, very little hype at all, then the reviews hit - BOOM
