I thought we were all accustomed to Mario holding the trophy for best platform game ever prestige? Nintendo have always had that trophy cabinet locked well and truly tight even since the genre was invented with the first game.

    SMB
    SMB3
    SMW
    SM64
    SMG

I can't ever remember any other platformer getting even close to a look in throughout the various generations. Not even Sonic.

      DKC2>SMW. I kid you not.

I've tried to stay away from SMG2 media but the one thing that really will improve this over its predecessor is the removal of the hub which only succeeded in harming the pace of the game. A new, streamlined map and hopefully increased challenge over the original will make this game just about perfection. And I should have it this time next week!

It's not pretentious babble, it's a method of saying something with few words - an art that has long been a hallmark of good writing. Same goes for poetry.

For anyone with the issue? Is there a code for a subscription offer in the latest issue? My subscription ended about 4 months ago and i want to renew.

I'm not altogether sure why you need a code, but the free gift is currently a Blaze portable MegaDrive with 20 built-in games:

Can someone put the internet game of the month in these threads please. I keep forgetting to check my copy when I get home and could do with something little to play at lunchtime

No, its pretentious babble and it is not saying somthing using fewer words, not that that's always a good thing anyway.

The way its worded dosen't actualy make any sense, thats actualy bad writing. They could have simpley said "It pushes so many boundries within the genre and it is never anything less than a joy to play, it will take somthing truley outstanding to better it, if bettering it is even possible.". It makes more sense while meaning the exact same thing.

If they really needed to use the "lock up" thing they should have at least put it in a sentence that made sense, but I dont think its a term that works that well at all really in relation to what the reviewer was trying to say.

I did write this on another forum when I read the On-line review..

"I've not read something so highly positive for a while. I adored and still do the first galaxy.

The writing in the review which said "This isn’t a game that redefines the genre: this is one that rolls it up and locks it away" gave me goosebumps.

                        Fantastic"

I personally thought that was a great piece of writing. I'm not getting drawn into an argument. I respect others opinions etc etc.

Surprised at Mario Galaxy 2 getting a 10 but then i'm not surprised as it's Edge. Until i've played it i simply fail to see how it can get top marks if it's more of the same.
I don't mind it still getting top Marks, What I hate is why EDGE still give out top marks or keeps to same score of sequels like Pro Evo, Fifa, Street Fighter IV , Halo, Mario Galaxy 2, only to mark down the likes of God Of War III, VF5 for being nothing more than just the same . Its just really is unfair.

I can't ever remember any other platformer getting even close to a look in throughout the various generations. Not even Sonic.
Well imo Castlevaniva IV and Revenge of Shinobi, Ghost N Ghouls are so close to Mario IV for Platform perfection, Quackshot & Castle of Illusion were fabulous too. I think people forget just how good Rayman II really was .

Also for me Wonderboy, Manic Mannier, Pyshco fox were much better 8bit platformers. There's more to Platform games that just Sonic or Mario

You say it doesn't make any sense but, on the evidence provided by users in this thread, I think the majority of the magazine's readers will have translated the statement the way Edge intended, especially those mindful of the context in which it was written.

Well its true I havent actualy read the review in full, but I have read many edge reviews before and it does seem like the type of nonsensical stuff they usualy write.

The way the paragraph in question reads as it was quoted on here ("This isn't a game that redefines the genre: this is one that rolls it up and locks it away...") makes it sound like they are saying the developers have locked the genre up, decided not to release it and arent going to let anyone play it. Which makes no sense at all.

Its a ridculous statment and just serves to remind me why I stoped reading the magazine reguarly ages ago.

Like I said in reference to the paragraph in question, others who've commented in this thread don't seem to have drawn the same message as you did.

If I read something and I don't get the central idea - where as others do (something I'm sadly not unfamiliar with), is it the writer or I who is to blame? I suppose you could argue a review, unlike poetry or great literature, should be straightforward to read and require little interpretation, but that's another argument. At the end of the day I think we'll just have to agree to disagree.
