The Beauty of Track & Field

At the weekend I popped down to Cambridge to visit some Uni friends who have just started a teacher training course armed with a secret party video game weapon....

International Track and Field 2000 for the trusty N64.

This game really is immense when four players are on board. Many hours were wasted bashing and thrashing the unusally shaped N64 pads, finding yet more unique positions or hand movements to shave the 100 m record down a few hundreths of a second, gain an extra coup[le of cm's on the pole vault or land splendidly with a near perfect 9.96 in the gymnasium.

It's such a competitive game with eight events on the championship mode and absolutley tons of unique contests that really anyone can play and pick up on. I even noticed it got a mention in the top ten issue of Edge for multiplayer delights this month. I haven't had as much fun in a long time from a multiplayer session which got me thinking to other less well known games that may be pretty average in single player but killer in multi. I know it's not really a super hardcore import japoroma topic but I thought I would tell you all how great it was.

To see if anyone has the game and can beat these records/times these are some of the satnd out highlights from the weekend button bashing.

    100m 9.54 sec
    High Jump 2.53m
    Long jump 9.06m
    100m Breast 1.00.27 sec
    Weightlifting 275kg
    Vault 9.96
    Triple Jump 8.50 m

We sucked at Trap shooting and the Hurdles however. I've just found out the Playstaion version has different events like Cycling, Diving, Rowing and bloody Rythmic Gymnastics!!!

*Goes to trawl the web for more "Track and Field" genre games*

I tried it at ECTS a couple a few years ago. (99 or 2000... can't remember. WOW! that's so long ago) It seemed quite fun. I don't really remember much about it to be honest.

Edge made a nod to International Track & Field on the PS1. And rightly so, it is by far the best iteration of the series since the original arcade version in the 80's.

I play Virtua Athlete 2k for the Dreamcast loads still, I love Athletics games they rock.

Back in the Mid 90's I was hooked on Athlete Kings (Sega Saturn) and 98-2001 I was hooked on International Track and Field (PSOne).

I wonder what athletics game will be next.....

Did anyone play the Atlanta Olympics official game, it was on the PS, it was ****ing great. Traditional button bashy stylee but it was probably more simulation compared to Track and Field's slight Arcadey feel.

It had really nice events like Weightlifting and Fencing as well to add to the usual mix of athletics events. It also had a pretty well done 400m.

That would rock, especially if they had a big leaders table for each event, It'd be like REALLY holding the WORLD record, it'd be fantastic!

Listen up, the daddy is surely Athlete Kings on the Saturn.

Or if you can stomach winter sports

Winter Heats, which improves over Athlete Kings (Decathlete) in almost every area.

Looks like there will be a Sega Ages release of Athlete Kings coming soon. Hopefully with 4 player support or more
