          Blimey!

We've had jail-bait thong displays, homo-erotic wrestlers and now buxom bikini-clad beauties!

Who knows what the next banner will be?!

Do these games actually sell well in the UK? If so who buys them because to me they seem a bizarrely concieved and trivial mix of genres and no interest to real gamers of any age or either sex.

They're essentially dress up sims you would have thought more suitable for younger girls than anyone else. Yet they're, very obviously, styled to appeal to an immature and, I'd say, sheltered younger teenage (US?) male audience who haven't yet worked out how to access real porn on the internet. But these are just the sort of lads you'd think wouldn't be seen dead 'playing' anything like this.

When it's part of a fighting or some other type of serious game pretty CGI girls with ridiculous chest physics in scanty clothing can have, cough, a certain appeal. What I mean is that it's a understandable use of mild titliation which may help it to sell.

But when that mild titilation is the core raison d'etre, the gaming content so thin and what there is aimed, seemingly, more at pre-teen girls I just don't get the concept at all. Who is expected to, let alone who actually does, buy it?

The banner is getting worse by the day!

It looks like a Playboy calendar now.

At least the Shoot 1-Up chick had a robo-bikini on!

In writing my own review I read a lot of reviews on other places, and I’d say that the question most frequently asked is this one, about the target audience. I must admit that it’s not something I’m entirely sure, either, even after playing the game for twenty hours or so.

However, although I would agree that dress-up is a big factor in this game, I wouldn’t say that it’s the sole preserve of younger girls, as you put it. Because, in many ways, whether it’s smartphone stuff, car customisation, or any kind of activity which is centred on changing the aesthetics of something just for fun/one’s interest, dress-up can be seen in many other shapes and forms, and most people of all ages and genders take part in such games.

Some reviewers have mentioned the fact that the game is aimed towards gamers more in the ‘otaku’ spectrum, which is a good point, especially if one considers the fact that, at least in Japan, Tecmo shipped three versions of the game, with the most expensive package containing the game, a photo book, a soundtrack CD and a plastic figure. (It’s difficult to say whether this was such a smart choice; a month later, the price of all three packages plummeted.)

Reading the above, it’s difficult to dismiss the notion that the game is built on titillation and voyeurism, but I think that the game’s biggest failure is that it somehow can’t convey the message that it’s not really porn. There is a strong connection, of course, and it might not look that way from the screenshots or the promotional videos, etc. But I do think that it’s something different. The big problem, however, is that the game industry, as well as society in general, has a problem with sexuality, and I think that this has hindered what Tecmo has been trying to do with this game series, which presents titillation and voyeurism from a more interactive perspective.

The minigames in the DOA Beach Volleyball games are not there because Tecmo needed an excuse to sell the games as games. I think that’s not the case at all. The thing is that if the minigames weren’t there, it would be a much more vapid experience. It’s true that it is a bit thin and repetitive, gameplay-wise, but it’s different, and not at all some kind of porn substitute for ‘sheltered teenage males who haven't yet worked out how to access real porn on the internet.’ The primary audience are those young males, I think, but Tecmo needed to do more to explain the experience.

(Still, the biggest mystery for me is the fact that Tecmo decided to develop this game for the PSP. It’s hard to believe that people would find it more appealing just because it’s a more ‘private’ experience on a handheld….)

Hmm... I don't know. I think soft porn does play a bigger role in media than people think, and I think many people find it appealing, in some way or another. I remember reading a report that said that the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated is, by far, the most popular issue of the year. And, from another point of view, the nude (especially the female nude) is a primary theme in most painting/illustration traditions.

Sometimes people prefer porn that isn't comprised of close ups of bleached arseholes, freakishly large penises and diseased/overused vaginas whilst a slutty woman moans and swears in an incredibly fake manner.

And sometimes people prefer it when the camera focuses on a woman's little toe and you get a close which shows lets you see right in between their toes and the foot is slightly damp from being in a thick sock all day and you can almost smell what it's like and....

                        *cough*

excuse me for a few minutes...

                          I bought this game yesterday.

Don't really see why people frown upon it, pervert games are a good laugh.

The one thing i liked about the previous titles is the beach volleyball, if they developed that into a proper game it would be better. Am i right in thinking they removed the volleyball from the psp game?

Only had a quick go this morning but the volleyball is definitely still there, just seems like a portable version of the previous games so far.
