    Best WW2 XB360 FPS

I recently realised I haven't played a WW2 FPS since the fairly bad MoH Rising Sun on the original XBox. So I'd like some recomendations for one with a good single player campaign to put on my XB360 wish list.

After reading the reviews Hour of Victory is definitely out of the running but my initial choice: CoD: World At War has also been put in question by some aspects of the gameplay I've read about.

There are all the other earlier CoD games but which one is best and are there any others worth considering?

Wolfenstein occured to me (loved Return to Castle Wolfenstein), but it's not exactly authentic WW2 anyway and disappointing, so I've read. BIA: Hells Highway can also be discounted. due to weak reviews and as I've not got round to either of the earlier original XBox versions yet, not a lot of point.

So is there anything else or something in the works worth waiting for?

There aren't a great deal of them, all I can think of is COD2 which is excellent and COD1 which I think is only 800msp on XBLA

Brothers in Arms is definitely worth a go - aside from some performance issues and rinse 'n' repeat gameplay on standard difficulty, it's not a bad game. You don't need to have played the previous games to get it either.

There's also COD3 (which is okay but too scripted and probably the worst of the COD games) and MOH: Airborne (which is pretty good but not great).

COD2 is the best by miles.

I really liked Airborne - even the mediocre bits were lifted by having probably the most rousing soundtrack I've ever heard in a game.

What aspects? I thought CODWAW was terrific.

Grenade spamming by the AI in some levels apparently and a new one, to me, something somebody described as an AI form of "grenade martyrdom". Sounds like a worthy addition to the ranks of psychic enemies, trigger point respawning and other cheap and annoying gameplay devices.

I've only found a few complaints about this and no doubt I'd learn to compensate. It's certainly not intimidating, I've played plenty of FPSs on their toughest settings, but it's enough to make me wary of the game.

I like the sound of CoD2 though and at the price you can find it at now I might get it even if somebody comes up with another suggestion.

BTW do the CoD games feature realistic blood/gore? I always find it highly questionable when shooty games, particularly those sold on their authenticity, balk at the depiction of at least some of the effects of violence.

CoD2 no argument. Play it on veteran and feel the fear.

World At War doesn't pull many punches. The other CoD games do, but WaW is considerably more graphic with some powerful scenes.

It would be my recommendation. CoD2 is also good, but feels pretty dated now. I was playing it again very recently and you're left in no doubt that you're playing a 5 year-old game. I really missed being able to sprint in it, or use the "Tactical" control scheme you can use in the newer games. The single-player Campaign is decent, but I don't think there's that much difference in quality between it, and WaW's. You could just buy both though since they portray completely different WWII campaigns.

I'd definately go for COD2 first, as Kubrick said, you might miss the sprint button and other more modern features if you do it the other way round

Never go by reviews, because you'll miss out on so many classics its untrue. BIA HH is a very good and enjoyable game, and you don't need to have played any in the previous series . I would say its the best WW II FPS on the 360, and I just love the slow motion replay kills.

COD II is very good and MOH Airborne is ok

I still like Airbourne. CoD WaW is uncomfortably graphic in bits, and I found it a bit dull. But Airbourne, while it had issues (psychic AI, very short campaign) actually felt quite tactical, mildly authentic and not gratuitous. You'd probably find it for a couple of quid these days.

                          COD 2.

For me still one of the best shooters on 360, Veteran is nails but fun.

The first Call of Duty has a better single player, but I haven't played the console port so I can't say for certain.

Looks like CoD2 then. I'm 4+ years behind with most of my gaming so the fact it's old won't be an issue. Last FPS I played a few months ago was something of a similar age, the generic but actually rather good Black (XBox).

Interesting comment from Team Andromeda about BIA: Hell's Highway - made me think about that again. I had been tempted even with the reviews etc because I could have picked up a very clean looking metal tin version at my local game for ?5.99 any time in the last month. It had gone when I went in yesterday unfortunately.
