3 10s in a row (and an 11) aka "I'm loving gaming right now"

    Good times for gamers.

The last 3 reviews upped have been 10s (and there was also my 11/10 just before them ). Regardless of whether they should or should not have actually got the top spot, these are quality games in both mainstream and niche genres (SMG2, Death Smiles and LIMBO).

I'll be grabbing LIMBO as soon as it arrives later today. Meanwhile I'm playing Sin and Punishment 2 on the Wii which will probably get ~9/10 when I review it. It's the J version which I've had hanging around since the J launch AGES ago, but due to backlog have only just reached it. I wish I'd prioritised it (as was my intention) to make people more aware of it because it's FANTASTIC.

The last things I played were Deadly Premonition and Red Dead Redemption. Deadly Premonition is by far the best adventure game I've ever played. And Red Dead is an amazing way to take the GTA template and breathe new life into it with a fantastic setting, glorious views, and some cool gameplay.

Additionally, I've got the US version of Death Smiles ready to be hammered as soon as I'm done with S&P2 and although the US port doesn't look perfect (weird solvable screensize issues and some slowdown removed), it's still looking like an amazing game - it's refreshing to play a quality side scroller too.

A look down the First Play forum shows that there really isn't enough time in the world to play all the good stuff.

What's the point of this post? Just to big up our hobby really. End of last year it dipped a bit for me, but I'm certainly getting my money's worth at the moment.

Yep too many great games. Too bad I'm off travelling for at least 6 months in a few weeks. Will be coming on here and asking you guys what I've missed! Could be along list by the looks of it.

Do you guys discuss giving a game 10 / 10 or is there free will on the reviewer to give the score they feel it deserves?

All reviews are voted on and discussed with the final decision resting on Charles' shoulders.

Personally Limbo wasn't even on my radar but it certainly is now.

It looks like the Braid of 2010, but possibly even better.

for the life of me I can't believe that Limbo is worth a ten, gaming perfection ? not even close.

its an arthouse style game aimed at critical and pseudo intellectual praise that forgets you need to have an decent game in there.

I always accept that you can't agree with all 10s as some will be in genres you don't like, but I quite like puzzly platformer things and this isn't an example of the state of the art for me.

pretentious and average at best, for my money.

What's all this off topic score chat ****e. I thought my first post made it clear that this thread isn't about scores - it's about bigging up the hobby, not bringing it down.

            OUT of my thread

There are too many threads about "gaming is dead for me". I just wanted a thread of positive stuff.

I am loving the scene right now.

Demon's Souls has completely captivated me and reminded me WHY I love games.

We should be rejoicing because we have the CHOICE now of many amazing games to play.

It used to be that there was just a few brilliant titles a year. Now there is a game worthy of being played every month.

but charles, your basic premise is 'how great gaming is, just look at the scores' - carry that through and why not just give everything a 10 and it will be in the best shape ever.

maybe its diverting your thread but I liked the old school Edge approach where something had to be new, amazing and appealing to a large demographic to merit a 10.

if stuff is scored a 10 on simply being best in a narrow class lets give flick kick football on the iphone a 10 as well.

Stop dragging the thread down (again).

My presmise is that I'm REALLY enjoying LOADS of games at the moment. The scores bit was just what prompted me to post the thread. If it will help you to post some postive stuff in the thread, shall I change the topic title to "I love gaming at the moment" for you?

cutmymilk and ItsThere seem to have got the right end of the stick. Copy them.

I'm loving all the great games too. I've been rocking Dragon Quest IX since it's US release since the 11th, before that I'd 100%ed Red Dead. I'm mentally lining up SMG2, Sin & Punishment and Deathsmiles too! Just wish I had more free time to get through them all, at least LIMBO sounds like it's bite sized enough to sneak in to my full gaming schedule. Oh for the days of long Summer holidays eh?

I am loving gaming too. Final Fantasy XII, God Hand, Okami and more are all in my machine all of the time.

                      It is 2006 right?

                        heheh. that's quite some backlog.

Also I forgot to mention, there's a fair amount of uber cheap Indie games that I'm enjoying. See toythatkills thread for details.

Great comment and i couldn't agree more. I think 10's are given out way to easily and preferred the old school Edge mag attitude where a game had to be something really special to warrant top marks. There is less than a handful of games that i think deserve a 10/10.

Oh and although im not a schmup fan Deathsmiles has caught my attention recently and i really like the look of it.

Any more score discussion in this thread and I'll have to close the internet.
You got away with it because you said you really liked (the look of) a game.

I'm glad some people are finding so much to play because feck all interests me right now. Unless I want sub par modern games to chunk along with.
