I missed out on the SNES, so can't comment on it, but the N64 version was too cheap, AKA ****.

So I guess my fave is the GBA version, I had fun on it 4 player link up. Maybe I would've had more fun if it was on an SP...

Snes version for me - still keep trying to beat my times on the very first track

SNES version - utterly loved battle mode, rocked on that, shame it was only 2 player. GP mode was harsh but fair at 150cc, the CPU drivers were tough but didn't cheat.

N64 - slightly better tracks imo, but the CPU cheats to buggery. Far better as a 4 player multi drive fest.

GBA - see N64 but with SNES like graphics.

Personally it's hard to call, though just between my brother and myself, we still prefer the SNES version.
Lie with passion and be forever damned...

          SNES version over here!

Two player ghost track #1 all day long! Keeping the corners TIGHT and chucking loads of bananas on the bridge...

          No contest.

Or on the shortcut - especially on 150cc when you could make the shortcut with just an L (or R) jump.

SNES Mario Kart all the way - probably my favourite racing game of all time.

SNES version had secrets like throwing bananas and laying shells behind you, or did these appear in the manual? Just remember chucking a Banana by mistake one day and then working out how I could use this new tactic when schooling my mates.

N64 version for me. I prefer the analog controls, the courses (I loved the desert one with the train and the one with all the traffic) and the fact that it has a 4 player mode.

I did like the battle mode more on the original though. I thought the layout's were poor on MK64.

                  My sentiments exactly.

Another thing I favoured from the SNES version was the feather because, unlike the blue shell from MK 64, it took great skill to use it effectively.

I'd love to get an import SNES just to play it, Super Mario World, and Pilotwings again but fear I'd end up spending too much money on all the other classics.

                    Snes version.

TBH anyone who picks the N64 version over the snes version is a fool. Pure racing skills vs pot luck weapons selection is a no brainer. GBA version is good but not quite as special as Snes original.

and im still bitter ?120 quid for possibly the worst letdown sequel ever, i very nearly lost faith in Nintendo around a week after Jap MK64 release.

I'd forgotten all about that. I think I remember paying around ?85 for my copy with the limited edition MK 64 control pad (which was just the front of a black pad and the back of a grey pad screwed together!).

I wasn't bitter though, I didn't genuinely expect it to succeed the original (as it's difficult to improve on near-perfection) and still consider it one of the N64's finest games.

My favourite version of Mario Kart? The answer is obvious...

                        Diddy Kong Racing.

Not taking the piss, the single player experience bordered on genius and the multiplayer, whilst not being the random cacklefest that was MK64, allowed players more room for skill both in racing and powerup 'management' (yuck). Plus you could have, planes, hovercraft and karts all in the same race.

And I remember staying up for 7 hours solid from midnight in order to beat Wizpig

GBA for me, it has better graphics and new courses as well as all of the ones from the SNES original, the only thing that could be improved would be the inclusion of the feather and of course Koopa Trooper.

I think the reason why most people on here prefer the SNES version is because that was the first version we played, ask people that started with the N64 version and they will probably say the SNES one was crap.

Pot luck weapons? The weapons were just as random in the Snes version.

when i said pot luck weapons i meant the fact that on the last lap you could be 1st by 3432545453454 miles only to be shot 300000983405823409 times by your opponents behind and loose the race due to pot luck weapons.

And BTW Diddy Kong Racing was supurb in single player (a area of MK that was never that good tbh) but just not as good as MK in multiplayer.

The N64 version was just pap, no skill in racing - the reason i despise it so much is that after nearly 13 years i can boot up MK with my m8 and play it and have insane fun dodging red shells and using uber green shell rebound shots that put my school triganometry to shame !! Its simply one of the greatest 2 player games ever, this can not be said about the N64 version that was far too weapons heavy and the courses to crap to have pure driving skill based races.

Im sure many on this here board play to the same and better level than me, in which case they will appreciate taht a red shell rarely settles a race as they can be avoided easily, a green shell is dangerous but basically one driving mistake and thats it - the other player has won.

To me that is true greatness.

                                Amen
