There's a difference between creating a character from scratch to make it edgy and drastically redesigning an existing character to make it edgy 'for a new generation!11'.

The former seems like the norm, the second is pure pandering.

Imagine if they made a new Castlevania game, gave it strong romantic themes and Dracula sparkled.
