    Early adoption

    So..... What do you do?

The next round of consoles is released in Japan. Do you get them on day 1, or do you wait 6 weeks for someone to figure out how to chip them to play US games as well? Why?

    I'm bored

    Day 1 every time.

Nothing beats the excitement of getting a console at Japanese launch in my eyes and every console has at least one game that makes it worth owing sooner or later so any doubts over software quality are non existant anyway.

As for the US modification then i see it as nothing more than a bonus if / when it happens, it certainly has no bearing on my purchase decision.

Not so much day one for me, more like 7-14 days after release once the prices have dropped, if Im buying within the UK that is. Apart from my Xbox, Ive always generally bought launch consoles from UK retailers. I like the convenience of being able to pick them up myslef, as Im not too trusting of the postal service to deliver items undamaged.

After being burnt with the severe lack of software on the PS2 launch, I've decided to approach early adoption with caution in the future, as while it is unquestionably cool to be one of a small number to own such a new console in the U.K - that doesn't count for much if you have zero titles you want to play on it.

I don't agree that there's a game for 'everyone' in any console's launch titles ( obviously there are almost always ones later, but in the case of MGS2 and GT3 later turned out to be a long time indeed ). It's been a while since I saw a game that made me want the console ( Super Mario World, I believe ) for that sole reason, any other games I bought early on were pretty much to avoid the embarassment of having nothing to justify the console to yourself except a pretty dashboard screen.

If I am loaded and I would wait 6 months and see how it map out and then buy it at reduced price and get an better idea what games or which version to buy.

I mean XBOX, PS2 and GC at launch would cost about 740 pounds roughly and now you can buy XBOX, PS2, and Gamecube for about 320 pounds together.

Never bought a console on jap launch as the retailers are just a bunch of rapists over here. Usually wait a month or so for everything to calm down. Saying that with the ps2 i didnt bother to get one till a year after pal launch and then i sold it within twelve months.

            So i'm sort of a mid-early adpoter

To be honest I'm astounded as to the lengths and expense some people will go to have things early, sometimes only a few days early. I would never, ever buy a console on release date, nor would I ever buy CPUs or graphics card upon release, its madness!

The CPU/graphics card example is totally different though.

There isnt a PC game ever launched which requires the best graphics card/cpu on launch.

You gain just about nothing from buying these early.

However if you dont buy a console on launch you simply cannot play the launch games.

Yeah thats a fair point, still wouldn't pay stupid amounts to get a console early. I see games for stupid amounts in import shops when all it takes is for you to be prepared to have an extra weeks wait to get it from somewhere like DBO for ?30.

I always buy Nintendo products on launch because I am t3h F4nboi.

Picking my GBA up on jap. launch made me very popular indeed. ?150 wasn't a bad price really either for the technology back in March 2001. I had to have the new 2D F-Zero.

Couldn't afford a Cube on launch. But my mate, Greg, bought his first as I had a US one pre-payed. Ithen blew my pre-pay money on loads of DC games instead, rather foolishly.

Credit goes to Greg though - for lending it to me nearly every weekend. 8)

Day 1? If it's within 4 years then it's quick for me...

Yes I want a Japanese PS3 with DW6/7? at launch. Story and plotlines are overrated and I want immediate gratification. I just hope Play Asia has a nice preorder deal or something.

If I can chip it later great if I not I'll have one to hold me over until the US launch. Unless it costs to damn much to buy, then I'll wait like everyone else.

                          nintendo....definate.
                          PS3...maybe, depends on software
xbox2...i might pass on this altogether.

i wouldnt go nuts with the money for any of them, but you dont need to unless your stupid.

I love Day 1 purchases, being able to look over a console before seeing it on web sites is cool. However its a Nintendo thing for me ! i own all 3 current machines but would only buy the next Nintendo machine day 1, i have many Jap gc games but only 2 jap PS2 games so its the same for games aswell. I just like getting Nintendo release (hardware and software) on the first possible moment.

Im sure its the snes in me !

                              Same here.

I have bought a few Jap consoles on launch day (Super Famicom, Saturn, Playstation, N64) but was horrorfied when I had to part-ex my Jap Saturn, my Jap Playstation, a good few games and accessories for both systems, and about ?100, all for the Jap N64 with Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64.

I learnt a valuable lesson that day so waited almost a month after the launch date before getting the Jap Gamecube.
