Anything that interrupt me while playing a game, unskippable cutscenes, unskippable scripting and events that takes the control away from me playing the game...

Misplaced "diversifying and enriching" experiences in a game, like stealth sections in a Zelda game, any vehicle section in Gears of War, the asteroid simulator in Dead Space and ****e like that.

"interactive" cutscenes where you need to press a button in the style of Dragon`s Lair, just stop it...

    Escort missions...

    Underwater levels...

    Respawning enemies...

Not every game needs zombies in it...

Sudden and or misplaced difficulty spikes, usually used to hide lack of content.

Not being able to cutomise the controls in a game, or not being able to turn volume down or stop the music.

Just because a given controller has x number of buttons, your game doesn`t need to use all of them.

    That`ll do for now ^^

Rubber Band mechanics in racing games, at least give me the option to turn it off.

Not all games needs multiplayer, stop adding it just to be MTV cool, and reviewers really should start giving scores for single and multiplayer separately.

    Gaming related Irks

Any kind of online authentication for offline singleplayer games, all DRM "solutions" which installs **** on your platform of choice, actually DRM schemes in general...

Actually any service which prohibit or limits what should be your basic consumer rights, like selling your games when you`re done with them, buying games second hand, monopolising price and distrubution channels, bypassing core free market principles and reintroducing region lock out (mal)-practices.

Bulletstorm - Not being able to see which skillshots I have gotten before on a 2nd playthrough. Makes it annoying when going for 100% of the list.

That literally sounds like every time I turn on my Ps3 to play PAIN

I know I'm getting nostalgic but I liked it when you knew your only delay in getting to play would be one go of having to take the cart out to blow on it. When you've got short play windows, I dread those update messages.

oh for gods sake 9 patches downloaded so far and then it says is going to download a program to make patching easier and after that it has queued up another 6 patches

QTE's which are designed in a way that you can't focus on the action that's appearing on screen. Very few plan correctly around this

Watching someone play the QTE bits in Fahrenheit is awesome, brilliant little action scenes. Playing them though... all you're doing is watching the icons as missing one means DEATH.

Yeah, I find that mostly QTEs simply serve as a reminder that I am playing a game, rather than feeling a part of it. Made a thread on it once which turned into an interesting discussion. Although, after all these years, I still haven't played RE4 which I think people said handled them well.

The only game that handled QTEs well in my eyes was Shenmue, if only because the buttons you were required to press directly correlated with how the character needed to react, e.g. press down to duck down etc.

The ones in Resident Evil 4 make nice setpieces, but as QTEs it represents how not to implement QTEs - the button presses are random, and have nothing to do with how the character reacts.

It was Ghost of Sparta that reminded me, it copies GOW3 in putting the icons at the corresponding edges of the screen rather than smack in the centre meaning you can watch the action and know what to press purely through detecting via your peripheral vision. Such a small tweak but makes a massive difference.

usually happens every year with the top game lists for the year yet i find it hard to put into words what bugs me

but looking at the games master top 10 lists for the xbox and ps3 in there latest mag about 8 of them are multiformat i think what irks me is some games (even though i know there great) are getting so much hype and yet may be other games left by the wayside

What's with game makers? At some point before joining a company to make games, they must have had lives where they had their moms call them down for dinner?

My irk is that I've been playing a bit of PS3 (Fallout 3) and I dislike how when I turn it on, it defaults to the shop, then I have to cycle across to the games section and again, the first option is the shop.

It's not the fact I have to press a few buttons, it's Sony's insistence on shoving their wares in my curmudgeonly face. Look at our shop before you do anything! Now look again at the shop before you play anything!

It's like comical foreign shopkeepers trying to harass you into their gift shop. "Cheapy, cheapy! Asda price!"

Totally agree chimp. Microsoft are worse though IMO, especially if you're paying them ?40 a year for Live Gold and they still have adverts all over the screen. I think this generation is the end of console gaming for me.
