Yet SXSW has just cancelled a panel discussion on addressing harassment in games because of numerous death threats.

Gaming really hasn't progressed as far as it should have.

      Yup. In a nutshell.

But thats not representative of the gaming industry, the people that Sarkeesian attacks with absolute and relentless zeal.

It's a tiny % of video game players that make threats like that. Rather than stand up to it, it gets used as fuel to stoke the fires of gamergate.

Gaming has moved forward leaps and bounds and she's determined to paint this negative image every where she goes, she gets prime time tv news slots and slags the entire industry off...
          You could have fooled me.

Also, provokes extreme reactions? If some videos "push" people into sending rape/death threats then the problem is with them.

Instead of worrying about how all gamers are being seen as bad we should be banding together and stamping this garbage out.

Sarkeesian no more attacks the gaming industry than film students and scholars attack the film industry. Our media - film, books, even music - gets deconstructed, interpreted and analysed all the time and has been for decades. But a new book analysing tropes of the Western genre tends not to generate rape or death threats. Criticism of gaming does. Gaming has a problem. And misogyny is definitely one of them, although certainly not the only one. Whether Sarkeesian's videos are right or wrong, it is absolutely a subject that requires people doing exactly what she is doing because gaming does have a problem and it needs to be rectified.

I'm not defending threats of any kind, i agree that it should be stamped out. But death/rape threats are a thing now in the dark corners of the internet, it's not something that is limited to a single person, sex or creed. The anonimity of the internet feeds into this behaviour and it's something that will always exist. As long as there is anonimity there exists disgusting comments.

The threats aren't the things to get worried about, it's the hacking of personal info that's the worst.

Death threats etc are not exclusive to gaming, they are part of the wider internet. Sadly it will happen in any medium.

Gaming has grown but certainly not enough. For every The Last of Us and Silent Hill 2, there are tons of Mess Effects and Witchers, games that are crass and uncomfortable in the very subjects they deal.

No, not exclusive to gaming. And yet seemingly very prevalent. We looked before for examples in comparable media and I think we found one related to music. People get their knickers in a twist over superhero movie casting too. But panels on superhero movie casting don't have to be pulled due to threats. And it isn't just threats, there is a whole spectrum here with threats just on one end with a large chunk of that spectrum not condoning threats yet still enabling them and supporting the environment in which they happen. Most priests probably don't fiddle with kids and yet the institutions supported and enabled it. With gaming, we have some flat out crazies (hopefully all talk) with a very large group of people saying they don't agree with the actual death threats but everything those death threaty people say is bang on the money and they spend their energies looking to show why the victims deserve it or invite it or want it.

That is a severely messed up situation in every way. And yeah, right now among mainstream media, that extent seems pretty exclusive to gaming.

You can basically carry on in this mode with many franchises both recent, current past. 2 years in there seems to be a solid number of people expecting PS5 and Xbox 4 to be announced on the horizon and a 5 year cycle to be revived. As. If.

What? What sense would that make?

Makes sense when you consider the freedom that gaming offers to social outcasts, unlike music and films which are passive experiences.

"Why are preorders a thing that can sell out now? Aren't they supposed to be used for knowing how many they need to produce? If demand is high enough for a preorder to sell out then take more orders!"

Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo DLC.... ?7 for a car. ?7 for another car. It also lets you do the PP track in career mode (already available in Loeb Experience mode as standard....) So that's day 1 DLC of stuff they already made at ?7 per car..... insane. How NOT to do DLC.

?7 for one car is insane! I hardly ever buy DLC it's a massive con.

I've only ever bought DLC on Mario Kart 8 and New Luigi Bros U but they're actually decent value. Most Nintendo DLC comes out a while after the games release and it's not a 'disc unlock'
